I was going through some old papers and stuff of hubby's last night when I came across a unopened envelope from Fidelity (he actually had quite a few unopened ones but they were usually just statements)... this envelope looked different... anywho, I opened it and inside was a check from Fidelity.... It was from when my hubby quit his last job a few years ago and I guess the company was putting money into a 401k .... when he quit I guess they cashed it out... it is not a huge cheque....

What I am wondering is that the cheque is dated January 31, 2005... can we still cash it or not because it is over a year old? Or would the money even be there anymore?

Hubby doesn't open a lot of his mail :P.... Like I mentioned he gets a lot of stuff from Fidelity and he probably figured it was just a statement or something.... :P silly hubby :P

If their is a expiration date they usually list it on the check, if their isn't one I'd assume there is no expiry date.

Your best bet is to take it to the bank and ask. My bank probably would, but then I've been dealing with them for almost 20 years. (They're also Canadian so the rules there may be different.)

If the bank won't deposit it, you can always contact the company who issued it and say you just found the check...in many cases they'll reissue (I know I've done that before and they will accommodate you).

nope, there isn't an expiration date on the check....

I guess it wouldn't hurt to take it to the bank and try and cash it....

I used to work in a bank and as far as I can remember checks are not any good after a year. You could try and sneak it past the proof dept in a bank. It may make it. Or like the others said, you could just ask.

this is what I was thinking, that cheques were not good after a year but I guess we can give Fidelity a call and see if they can re-issue the cheque

it would be hard for them to not see the date on this cheque... It is not like a regular cheque so I am sure the bank will inpsect it to make sure it is real

I worked in a bank for almost 20 years and the time limit on a cheque is 6 months...after that it becomes stale dated. Even though it is different for a Money Order........no expiry date. Your best bet is to call the company, they should re-issue you a new check. Enjoy and always nice to have a surprise like that.........{{{{HUGS}}}

Was that in Canada tho? I've cashed checks in the U.S. well over the 6 month time because I was always told the expiration is one year.
