When our visa is finally approved, is it possible to have one more visit into the states before actually entering before using the visa to enter?

Robin

Let me phrase that a little better. After the visa is approved is it possible to have one more visit without entering with the visa? Maybe that makes more sense.

No, a K-1 is a one-time only entry. A few people have asked at their interview if it's possible, and they were told no. Once the visa is in your passport, it must be activated the next time you enter.

Saying that, I know a few people have tried and it's entirely up to the BG you get. They may let you through if you explain to them you're not activating it at that time, but they may not. I don't think it's worth the trouble of being turned away; the risk is high. You'd have to be willing to leave and go back if they tell you it must be activated at that time.

The time between my interview and move date was over 4 months, so my fiance came to visit me the few times as I was unable to go there.

Some have been able to do it, BUT it all depends on the POE officer!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

We asked this question at our interview. The Consulate Officer said there is no policy dictating that the visa must be used when crossing, but that it was entirely up to the CBP Officer at the POE whether they make you use it or not. I, and a few others, had no problem crossing with the visa in our passports and not using it. But it's basically a hit and miss, so be forewarned. You can always have the Consulate defer the approval of the visa and send them the passport when you're ready to move. That was one of the options they gave us.

Not trying to bend the rules here, but for people with Nexus...we don't need to show a passport, so I'm guessing you could get over with that.

The worst thing that could happen is you get refused & have to go home, right?

Well I asked at my interview if I could cross the border with just my birth certificate and driver's license because you didn't need a passport yet to cross, and the interviewer told me that they would still see that I had a K1 visa on their screen or in my files or whatever it is.

There have been people who crossed and didn't use it, but I personally wouldn't risk it.
