My fiancee and her children are scheduled to travel to the US with their POE Newark NJ on August 3rd.

How long does it take to receive the coveted social security cards? The social security number is the key that unlocks so many doors,

such as a marriage license and driver license, just to name two.

Thank you for the replies. :star:

couple weeks typical

maybe unlocks the marriage license but won't be the only thing you need to get a DL... chances are no DL until much later

YMMV

Go to nearest Social Security Administration office.

Show passport from home country, and proof that you're in the country legally.

Receive letter that you have applied immediately, and actual card a week and a half later.

Depending on your immigration status, there might be a caption on the card. Either "not valid for employment" or "valid for employment only with DHS authorization". Or no caption at all (if you apply with an actual green card as proof of your legal status). If you get a captioned card, you can return to the SSA office later and apply for an un-captioned one.

Marriage license: in many states (I'm not going to say all because I don't know that) the foreigner doesn't need to have a SSN to get a marriage license. I most certainly didn't need one in Texas. Gov-issued photo ID is still required (foreign passport OK). Otherwise it would be an unsolvable Catch 22 of "can't AOS without being married, can't get marriage license without SSN, can't get SSN without AOS". The immigration process is convoluted and complicated, but not THAT insane ;)

Driver's license: most states require proof of legal presence (valid unexpired visa, EAD or unexpired I-94 OK) and gov-issued photo ID, and proof of residency in the state (not proof of legal residence in the US, but something to show you live in that state. water or phone bill, lease, sumfin). If you don't show an actual green card, two or ten year, some state will issue a goofy license: vertically printed and/or "temp. visitor" caption, and only valid for as long as your proof of legal presence is valid.

Hope that helps.

well

it takes forever.

in our case we havent recieved our SSN's yet.

it has been 3 weeks.

i suggest checking 'i will obtain SSN myself' in all immigration related documents and getting it by yourself from a social security office.

driving license isnt easy to obtain.

Are you in Jersey? No SSN needed to apply for the marriage, just take her passport. AS far as a DL, you are going to have to wait for her EAD. Jersey is a pain in the behind to get the DL.

Text book answer will be up to 4 weeks.

In reality, they should receive Social Security Card in 2 weeks if everything works o.k.

But sometimes marking "yes" for request SSN from DS-156 or DS-230 form doesn't work.

So they may have to visit Social Security Admin office to request it by themself.

In that case, it will take up to 10 days for mail delivery if there is no issues.

If there is any issue such as wrong data entered in computer system or something like that, it may take forever.
