I-864 Total income

I recently received my tax transcripts and I also have my tax returns. I noticed for total income per the I-864 you can not show any deferred amounts like 401K contributions. I thought it was strange that the gov is looking at your ability to support someone else but does not take into account money you could use for this purpose. It does not effect me but I was wondering if there was a way to include this?

Thanks

I would think you could include it as any other asset,, Ie, Stocks, bonds, property, cash. etc.

Could be because the amount shown in (for example) a 401k isn't an actual liquid amount - if you were to need use the money, you'd actually get back less (plus you're not likely to use it, at least most people wouldn't).

Right. If your income is sufficient anyway, neither these amounts of income or the associated asset are needed. It's pretty rare that somebody below the 125% of poverty level in income for their household size is contributing to a 401k.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

Yes it is true if you are close to the poverty line you probably would not be putting much in one. They do just ask for your current gross income (ie..salary) for the current year. I will not have to provide any supporting evidence except for the Tax Return info but it would of made it look even better with it added. Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

Follow the Guide recommendations here on VJ and you will be well served. This process is not about meeting the bare minimums with regard to evidence (preceeding line borrowed from another VJ'er).

Better to submit more that required and end up with a smooth trip and the desired visa as soon as possible.

Best of luck to you.
