Statistics on Asylum, straight from the Department of Justice:

http://www.usdoj.gov/eoir/efoia/FY08AsyStats.pdf

In FY '08: 10,743 cases were granted (out of a possible 47,459). Doesn't list how many were abused women but 10,743 is a drop in the bucket. Also if you crunch the numbers less than 23% of the total applicants were approved.

More Info:

What Is the Legal Standard for Granting Asylum Claims?

Asylum and refugee applications are both adjudicated under the same legal standard––a well-founded fear of persecution based on at least one of five internationally recognized grounds: race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.

Is Anyone Barred From Obtaining Asylum?

Under immigration law certain individuals are barred from obtaining asylum, including those who:

Have firmly resettled in another country prior to arriving in the United States;

Have ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated in the persecution of any person on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion;

Were convicted of a particularly serious crime (includes aggravated felonies);

Committed a serious nonpolitical crime outside the United States;

Pose a danger to the security of the United States;

Are members or representatives of a foreign terrorist organization; or

Have engaged in or incited terrorist activity.

What Is the Major Difference Between Asylum and Refugee Applicants?

The major difference between asylum and refugee applicants is that those seeking refugee status apply from outside the United States. Asylum-seekers must be in the United States or applying for admission at a port of entry.

So it does sound like this is the first category which excludes one gender..... interesting.

Why? Do you doubt the notion that women are culturally excluded from having the same rights to personal freedoms and justice in some countries? Can you name a country where the same can be said for men?

I can think of a lot of countries where a man would actually be laughed-out-of-the-station for claiming his wife is slapping him around.

... IN fact, I would say most countries.

hey captain thought police, read the original post, which i quote for you here:

"These are not easy cases to prove," said Musalo. "LR must prove that in Mexico violence against women is pervasive and that there is a societal perception that this is acceptable. Then she has to prove that the Mexican government is unable or unwilling to protect her, and on top of that she has to show that there is nowhere in Mexico where she can be safe from her abusers."

How is that equivelant to being excluded from enjoying the same rights and freedoms? Are you also suggesting that spousal abuse by females is as frequent as it is by males, that it is often culturally accepted, condoned and endorsed and that these men suffer from opression that often leads to rape/murder/suicide?

While I agree that there is a phenomena of spousal abuse by females, it's not the same in any shape or form as spousal abuse by males and while it is certainly not something to be laughed at, it is also not something that belongs in the same category as the abuse meted out to women by culturally and physically dominant males.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

There isn't any.

Some of the folks here have a strange need to create controversy out of nothing - as if to inject some excitement into their otherwise dull lives.
