I have read reports citing up to a third of domestic violence incidents has the woman as the initial aggressor.

How knows what the real numbers are as most cases.. especially where them man was his are reported.

It seems as if "women" are being singled out for asylum to the USA.

Are there other areas of asylum which discriminate based on gender?

Women are a special case IMO. With all the stories of women that are victims of rape and then punished for it I would tend to agree with this new policy. With other countries treating women as possessions I wouldn't have a problem with letting them get away from the abuse.

With that logic we will be importing a lot of women... and kids and disabled people.

Wonder how easy it would be to scam the system on this one?

Watch a video of a woman being stoned to death for getting raped and get back to me on that.

 THANK YOU !!!

Everyone take a deep breath & relax. First of all we're talking about a relatively small number of women, so I doubt very seriously that you would see a significant spike in immigrantion. Secondly for those of you fixated on the small percentage of women that would falsely claim abuse to benefit from asylum if you look at almost any program there is always a few that try to beat the system... it doesn't mean that the program shouldn't be enacted (that's like throwing out the baby with the dirty bath water).

Its not like the authorities don't check on people's stories - there is some onus on the asylee to prove that they have been subject to persecution and ill-treatment.

Usually of course, we're talking about people who are fleeing active warzones.

...there was not significant increase in claims. More than 29,000 people won asylum in the US last year on a variety of grounds.

From the OP. The idea that 'millions' of women would seek asylum is ridiculous. The same fear was voiced when genital mutilation was granted as grounds and there was no significant increas in claims.

why does mexico hate women?

Yeah, I was not aware Rape was part of the Mexican culture, ...not only committing rape but covering it up.

<<<The Obama administration has moved to grant political asylum to foreign women who suffer severe physical or sexual abuse from which they are unable to escape because it is part of the culture of their own countries.

>>>

Just wow. Amazing how you haven't been thrown off this site yet.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Asylum has been around for decades - there's no reason to suppose that all of a sudden there will be a massive uptick in claims because the government has provided some clarification.

FGM is not only a crime against women, it's a crime against children because the vast majority of it is done before girls reach eight years old. A child that young cannot petition themselves for asylum which is why there was no "significant increase."

Asylum isn't designed to right any wrong in another country, it is to give people that have no other way out a chance to get away from abuse or repression. I for one have no problem granting asylum to people that are truly being oppressed or abused. On the other hand I have no use for those that seek to scam the system or to bypass it all together. Do it legally and within the rules? Welcome friend! Do it outside the law? GTFO!

As for "we will be importing a lot of women".... look around. Half the people in this site have done exactly that.

There is also a program that allows Iraqi and Afghan interpreters to get visas to the USA (they are also eligible for assistance from the Department of State & Health and Human Services). I'm sure some of the people responding to this thread would have a problem with this program as well. These people risked their lives (and their families lives) to work for the military or State Dept. and IMO they absolutely deserve a chance to immigrate to the US.

This country is known as the melting pot because of all the ethnic groups that immigrated here. I'm not saying we need to open the flood gates but a few notable exceptions (like asylum for abused women and/or the interpreter example) make sense IMO.
