My flight is on Aug 8 but as early as today i am preparing my things that i am going to bring with me to the US

My POE is in Honolulu,Hawaii and its also the place where my fiance and i will stay in a while

Now i am also bringing books with me,one book of mine weigh 4 to 5 kgs (perry's handbook for chemical engineers), Unit ops by McCabe, and other books ....

Is it okey to bring 5 to 6 books,im scared that the custom would questions me with these...

Also im not sure if its okey to bring my notebooks (notebooks from college) and some review materials (some of them is photocopied)...

I have two luggage and the other luggage is for my books and other accesorries..and as PAL website stated i can bring two 32 pcs luggage...

Any advice please.......................

BOOKS?

Books are just about the only thing they DON'T worry about at customs.

However, there's another route you may not have thought about.

I don't know how reliable the mail service is where you are, but as I understand it

most postal systems have "book rates" which are much cheaper than shipping other heavy things.

If you're worried about anything, it might be going overweight and having to pay a stiff penalty,

not if this or that book will be looked at by customs.

Congrats on your POE in Hawaii.

Just watch out on the weight of your bags. Airlines allow only certain weight for your bag, then if it is too heavy you will have to pay extra. And it is quite a bit!!!

Check with the airline you will fly. I think the US airlines allow 75 lbs, that's like 35 kgs.

Really,,, check with the airlines,,, many are going to a new standard of 50lbs... I got a decent status on the airlines,, so, never have to pay. But, I see irrate customers all of the time that are shocked due to the unexpected costs.

Also, remember, you can take a small bag on board with you and a personal item like a purse or laptop bag.. I usually take a 20" rollerboard (hold 5 days of clothes) and a laptop backpack onboard the plane and check nothing.

They can't lose what I don't give them :)

You are entering the US as an intending immigrant on a visa for such. You can bring ANY and all of your personal property with you (provided it is legal in the US) and we are still allowed unlimited books. Your only restriction is that of the airline baggage rules. We sent Alla's books (about 6 boxes of them) by slow boat several months before she arrived. No problems. We just returned from 2 months in Ukraine/Russia and she brought a bunch of her favorite kitchen utensils from our flat in Ukraine, more clothes, more books and we had no problems. It is YOUR property and you are moving here.

As someone else has said, you can check postal options for sending books over (I've never heard of a "book rate" here in Australia but maybe there is something there). Otherwise you may want to look into shipping some items over via one of the courier services - I will be using DHL to send over a bunch of stuff since I'll be needing some heavy things like my PC (I know, computers are cheap in America, but mine is a customized gaming rig), books, and I'll end up sending the bulk of my clothes over that way too. To send three Jumbo boxes through DHL will cost me about $600AUD (I get special rates but the full rate would be about $840), not sure what prices are like in the Phillipines but considering it gets there in 3 business days and gets pre-cleared through Customs, it's worth the money.

Definitely check with the airlines about baggage restrictions - I've flown both United Airlines and China Airlines to the States, UA wasn't too fussy about luggage (I carried a huge handpag/purse, a laptop bag AND a small suitcase on board and they didn't bat an eyelid) but China Airlines weighed my carry-on luggage and told me to shift some stuff into my check-in. China Airlines also only allowed 24kg for check in luggage as opposed to 32kg that a lot of other airlines allow.

July 2007 - met Jesse at a beach party held by mutual friends in Long Island, NY

May 2008 - J-1 visa expired, had to move back to Australia

July 2008-September 2008 - lived with Jesse for three months in Staten Island, NY

March 2009 - Jesse comes to Australia for 3 weeks

April 2009 - Engaged!

05/20/09 - I-129F petition mailed in

05/22/09 - NOA1!

05/25/09 - touch

09/09/09 - NOA2!

10/01/09 - due to fiance's illness, we are abandoning pursuit of K-1 at this point. Packet 3 received from consulate but won't be returned.

For overseas flights, here it's allowed 2x22.5 kilos per person. I've checked with the airlines - Croatia Airlines and Northwest/Delta.

As of July 1st, Northwest/Delta allow only one suitcase (22.5kg) per person and for one additional bag they charge $50. If you check in someplace else, with another airline, you get what I'll be getting (2x22.5).

How do you ship personal belongings by courier? Do you have to provide the courier a copy of your immigration papers to show customs so that the stuff don't get taxed?

Are personal belongings tax free? I haven't come across detailed info about how to bring stuff over unlike in the Canadian immigration group where there seem to be detailed instructions about what to show the Customs people (lists of so and so).

BTW, would that be similar in that when you get to the POE, you show the customs/immig people a list of the stuff you're bringing in on the spot and then a list of stuff that will come in later?
