Somehow I rather doubt that "handouts" that keep people on the edge of extreme poverty are the reason that those people stay in those areas.

Pike are you serious?

Handout are exactly what has feed this whole cycle of poverty in this country.

Anyone who has even collected unemployment (not a hand-out) knows when the payments near the end, you get serious about looking for work.

Our nations history is full of episodes of people migrating from one area to another to find their dream... or at least work. When the Gov gives you just enough to get by, the motivation kinda shrivels up... not for all but for many.

I have spent time on reservations in AZ and it seems like a liberal utopia;

-lots of Government programs

-no greedy rich people

-

Are you serious Danno?

We're talking generational poverty here, not someone being off work for a few weeks.

There's nothing utopian about it - what a ridiculous comment!

Generational poverty?#######? What they got a electrified fence keeping them there? Classic demotard thinking!

You missed the ball again Pike here... let me throw slower.

IT's about a monthly check being enough to keep people from leaving for greener pastures.

Anyone of these young people could join the military to escape.

Nothing is holding them on the reservation, why don't they leave?

I never said it was a Utopian for those living it, I said it is a "liberal-utopia"

They don't 'leave' for cultural reasons. There is no "liberal-utopia" going on. There are ongoing effects of cultural genocide, theft of resources etc.

They often do join the military, although poverty and criminal activity can be serious barriers for many by the time they reach military age.

The reservation is also, philosophically, the only thing they feel they have left, thus making it difficult to leave. Of course past government programs forced removal, again for purposes of cultural genocide, but I digress...

So what is it then chief? If a free education and welfare cannot get someone out of poverty, then what is left?

My folks sure as heck had zero assistance when they came to Australia. No NHS or welfare back then. At the time, were subjected to a highly racist anti-legal immigrant AUS too. Everyone of my family members and cousins is now wealthy. Some worked two jobs during those years. As for their kids, none of us gang banged or committed crime. We worked or studied hard. Half of my cousins dropped out of school at 16 and pursued trade and their own businesses. The others went on to college. Both now just as successful as the other. Not one of us was born with a golden spoon up our #######. All of our parents were hard working and disciplinarians. I couldn't breathe without my folks not knowing where I was.

Poverty in America has a lot to do with the culture and attitude that has fostered within those communities. Sure, it is a hell of a lot harder to get out of poverty in America but it is not impossible. I will say this, the wealthy do not make it easy for the poor. Quite frankly many here have zero compassion and simply do not give a ####### about anyone else. Let alone the plight of the poor.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

That is garbage bro. Countries like Australia are living proof that providing basic services improves the entire community and is a long-term investment. Only third world countries provide squat to their citizens and look where that got them. I am yet to see the each to their own approach work anywhere in this world. Together we do better and that is a quantifiable fact.

While there are a small percentage of people who will live off the system, most people will use welfare as a stepping stone to improve their life. To the contrary, hard to get our of a rut when you don't know where your next meal or rent check will come from. At the end of the day, if someone wants to live off welfare, they are going to have quite a shitty life.

I would like to see the stats where a small percentage just use welfare as a stepping stone. I think it is most of them that use it.

Australia's welfare is 10 times more generous than that of the US's. It is also indefinite for anyone on it and provides someone on it with more money than an individual working 40 hour weeks on minimum wage in the US. Better yet, they give people actual money rather than food stamps or EBT. Therefore, you would think 30% of the country would be unemployed. Wrong. Australia's unemployment is currently at 5.5%. Average salary in Aus is about $42K now.

At the end of the day who would want to live of welfare or in section 8 equivalent housing? Most people want to build a life for themselves and just need the stepping stone and opportunity to do so. While we cannot change attitude, what we can do is provide people a chance to focus on getting get out of a rut and actually feeding into the system rather than off it. Know by as conservatives back in Aus as a long-term investment.

There are a lot different reasons BY, for which there are no simple solutions.

Whenever poverty is brought up in relation to crime, you always foist it all on the people in those situations, characterizing them as lazy @ssholes.

Do people have bad attitudes? Absolutely. But that's not the be all and end all of it.

The one good thing in this story is...... that it is a "news story".

Think about it, we actually live in a time and place where one would have to scour the country to find even one house with such a sign.

PS: She's an old lady from TX..... I'm betting she's a life long Democrat.

We got a bunch of them just like that around here.

They hate everything the Local Dim-ocrats do in office but they vote for them every time.
