N-400 Signing of pictures

This may be a silly question. Where does one sign the pictures at the N-400 interview process? Does one sign on the face of the picture? The picture specifications call for regular passport pictures. I know that when applying the A# and name must be written in pencil lightly on the back of the picture.

The reason for my request is that I notice on my spouse's Certificate of Naturalization which is 25 years old that there was an additional blank white strip on the photograph where the signature was placed.

Any info from someone who has recently been approved and had to sign his/her picture will be appreciated.

When applying the A# and name must be written in pencil lightly on the back of the picture as you said and at the interview the IO will ask you to sign the front of the photos on the side using a pen.
