It was just me and the kids for years before my husband came into the picture and now sometimes I have a hard time distinguishing between things I like to do that guys would also like to do and things that are just purely chic-like which my husband would hate.

I want to take him to the mansions in Newport one day next week but when I think of it, I've always gone with my girlfriends or my mom. Is this something a guy would actually be thrilled to do? http://www.newportmansions.org/page3569.cfm

I love all things historic and I know I"m nuts but I get a thrill out of just touching a mantle or a wall that someone years ago also touched. I remember when they pulled the last part of the hull from the titanic it was at the exibit in boston and they were treating it and one of the guys there let me touch it and I SWEAR I could feel the screaming of the drowning victims.

Anyways if this is a chick thing then I'm at a loss. We always go away for a week in the summer but money's tight and he's going to Cairo soon so I'm trying to look for cheap thrills for next week. Anyone?

What else is there to see in Newport though? I mean we live on the ocean here and to me, you've seen one you've seen em all you know? Maybe there's a concert somewhere nearby!!!!

So what is everyone else doing for their staycations?

I am always torn between what I want to do and what I think he wants to do.

There are those events and sites he MUST see being here and I have already seen them.

I think the guys would be fascinated to see some historic mansions.

I don't think that is strictly a girl thing at all.

Now if you asked him to go see "He's just not that into you" then I would give that a thumbs down. :hehe:

Lighthouses, historical highlights, cliffs, I know there used to be a few train tours - although I have never taken them. Newport was one of my most favorite summer destinations as I would stay for the summer at St Georges. I loved it there.

When are you going? The Newport Folk Festival is next weekend.

I just saw that!!!! He is going to take Wed off next week so that's when we're going. I don't want him to take any weekends off 'cause he's trying to save for his trip and those are prime tip nights, you know? Wednesdays the kids are with their dad all day and part of Thurs in the summer so it's kind of the best time to go for us.

Kid Rock and Lynyrd Skynyrd are playing in Mansfield so I'll play some songs for him, see if he likes them and then we could go there after Newport. Their concert got good reviews so I'm up for it! It'd be his first ever concert, not just in the US so that would be sooo cool. The coolest would be for him to see Metallica since that's his favorite band but I honestly don't think I could sit through that. :P

I would think he would enjoy learning some history, I too love any kind of history. I think he would enjoy it a lot. I freaking used to love Metallica. I would go for it, sounds like a lovely day for you two.

Bridget I don't know about your husband, but I would LOVE to see the Newport Mansions (gonna put this on my list of things to do someday in my life)! As for my hubby he could careless about historical things. I mean when we visited the pyramids or museums in Egypt he would tell me "it's just a bunch of old stuff and rocks." I couldn't believe it! Well whatever he feels or things about it I still torture him by making him go with me to these kinds of things. :P

As for your husband, have you just out right asked him? What has he said? Perhaps finding other things in addition to this may be fun as well. Good luck!

I wish i could get my husband to do some of that fun stuff. All he wants to do on the weekend is go to thrift shops or book sales. I'm so sick of those places. I just want one weekend where its all about what I would like to do, like a movie, or a walk down by the lake or just staying home and working in the yard. :( I am just gonna do that myself tomorrow. He can find his way around the city on the bus, so i'm gonna just let him go.

Oh I've asked him but he doesn't really understand what I'm talking about. He thinks they are just big houses. That's why I wanted opinions.

I did ask about the concert and he hates lynyrd skynyrd but likes kid rock. Go figure I'm the opposite. lol.

Looks like I'm going to have a vacation week full of thunderstorms so I'm shifting gears a bit. There is (i think it's still there) an original house from China in a museum nearby that I'd love to take him to but again, not so sure he'd be up for it. To be honest he's completely thrilled when we go food shopping. That's goodtimes right there for him.
