Quinceañera in Latin America

It's all about this from Motherhood at 15 years of age!

"The Quinceañera ritual has been traced to 500 B.C. from the Aztec culture where a girl at the age of 15 was considered apt for motherhood. They celebrated this coming to age with a ceremony, dance, and some words of wisdom by the mother. When the Spanish conquered America, they adopted this tradition and the Catholic Church replaced the dancing with a Waltz, and the Aztec Temple with a Catholic Church."

What brought this all about again was we received a second invitation, here, for one of these celebrations. I feel with even the Latin American culture, times have changed. Maybe a 16 when a girl is old enough to get a drivers' license, or better yet when she is 18, and that is for the parents, because if she gets pregnant, the grandparent law is no longer in effect.

Can see the Aztec point of view of on the subject, 30 years was the average lifespan, so if a child didn't get pregnant at 15, their race would die. But wife claims it's a tradition that should be still honored. I reply, with our Judea/ Christian heritage, we should be still burning women at the stake for witchcraft or stoning them to death for committing adultery, should we still honor that?

Wife kind of felt left out in her family when she turned 15, a dinner, played records, and had a couple of dances with her dad and brother, while other parent get a second mortgage on their homes for a three day drunken blast to celebrate this occasion. When my step daughter turned 15 we didn't know enough people to have a big party. Took a trip to the Dells for that day, and I got her a nice, but used red sports coupe which many of her peers in Venezuela choose. But like there and here, all they can do is kick the tires until they are 16. But had to do something to honor that tradition so my step-daughter wouldn't feel left out being in a strange to her country.

Last one we were invited to, the parents rented a hall with plenty of food and drink, being somewhat conscientious provide a cash gift to the young girl at least to cover the cost of our food and drink with a good sized tip, but still seems crazy to me. Wife knows the parents, the girl is still not allowed to date, but why celebrate this event, it doesn't mean anything!

But it's a TRADITION! Yeah, but so is stoning a women to death if she commits adultery, even fornication if not married, should we follow that tradition too?

LOL, don't take this seriously, we tease about it, least I do, but one of the few areas we are not in agreement with, that puts some fire in our lives.

In Mexico a Quinceañera is a huge party kind of like Sweet 16 here in America. It is nothing related to PREGNANCY.

Like you said, times have changed and thus the purpose and/or the perception of this celebration ok?

It's kind of hard to understand parties, specially if you are not part of that culture and if the origins are read from Wikipedia.

It's like me, I don't freaking understand NASCAR, the idea of watching cars go around in circles for hours is nonsense but hey that's culture for some... :P

Someone just doesn't want to pay for another party.

Someone has values, unlike you! :jest:

Yeah, assuming I get to have girls in the future, I will likely take her(them) on a Quinceañera family trip somewhere cool and cultured because libruls do that kind of thing.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

<_<

Libruls don't go to Mexico. They're too uppity and elite. They prefer fancy places where plebes go to drink their livers to 50% pathology on Spring Break. México. What where you thinking José?

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Hey, I like parties, does there have to be a reason to have a party? Why not the full moon or groundhog day? But a 15 year old kid entering motherhood that can't even date? Just seems a bit far fetched to me.

But I still honor the tradition, LOL.

And they are lame as #######. Only one of my cousins was trashy enough to demand a party like this one.... we still joke about it

oh, and they have not a thing to do with motherhood

My Church is something like 85% Latino population...I've seen many of these. I think they are kindof cool.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

Not when Lupita ---dark olive skinned- shows up in a peach colored number with ruffles; plus 15 of her hommies from high school in -oh yeah- white and peach tuxedos. That is just wrong. Example:
