A Bridgewater man who was charged last month with attacking a local policeman was arrested again yesterday for allegedly spouting racial slurs and expletives at officers from the same department.

John Bossany, 42, of Mountain View Avenue, was charged with fourth-degree bias intimidation and a disorderly persons charge of harassment for incidents that occurred on July 3 and 13, Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said. Bail was set at $2,500, and Bossany, who is Caucasian, was barred from contacting Officer Arthur Akins, who is African-American.

...

"We certainly deny that he did anything intentionally wrong," [Defense attorney Steve] Lieberman said.

The recent confrontations followed a June 16 attack in which Bossany is accused of hitting Officer Brian Schubert with a pickup and dragging him 10 feet.

...

About 10:30 a.m. that day, Officers Schubert and Mike Guerra were directing traffic in a construction area on Washington Valley Road when Bossany ignored the officers' orders to stop, the affidavit states.

Bossany struck Schubert's arm with the front metal bumper, causing him to fall, Packwood wrote. Schubert tried to open the driver's side door, and Bossany took off, dragging Schubert with him and punching the officer. He was charged with third-degree aggravated assault and resisting arrest, and police confiscated the truck.

About 5:30 p.m. on July 3, Bossany went to the impound lot to retrieve the truck. Officers John Mitzak and Akins and Sgt. Luke Daley were present. When Daley told Bossany the vehicle was evidence that could not be returned, Bossany became irate, yelling and cursing, Forrest said. As he left, Bossany yelled multiple expletives at Daley, insulting the sergeant's mother, and called Akins the "N-word," according to the affidavit prosecutor's Sgt. John Fodor filed.

Twenty minutes later, Bossany called the department, identifying himself as Steve, and asked for Daley, Fodor wrote. When the sergeant took the phone, Bossany made sexual comments and again used the "N-word" regarding Akins. Daley terminated the call.

About 10:45 a.m. on July 13, Akins was off duty and working out at the Power House Gym when Bossany approached himed and asked, "What are you staring at?"

"Did you hear what I said? Do you remember what I said? I hope you do because that's what you are, boy!" Bossany said later. "Don't let my size fool you," and left.

Bossany, a married father of three who owns a construction company that specializes in high-end homes, was arrested at home yesterday about 7:30 a.m., said Lieberman, adding his 7-year-old daughter was present. He was not handcuffed in front of the child, but Lieberman wondered why authorities didn't tell Bossany to report to the prosecutor's office.

Bossany suffered a brain injury during a 2004 motorcycle accident, "which his doctor has confirmed had a marked behavioral change with impaired impulse control," Lieberman said. He is subject to frequent agitated outburst and is undergoing treatment.

I wonder what the guy was like before the accident. I've heard that some brain injuries can completely change the character of someone's personality.

Yup.

I am also happy to read that the cops in this instance showed the decency to not handcuff him in front of his child.

Anatomical disinhibition. That's gotta suck. I wonder how many of the expletives were meant and how many were just... weird.

Perhaps we can classify some forms of racist behavior as a mental disease in origin. That would explain at least why some people that have cognitive defects also have logical defects that produce these strange kinds of behaviors.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I have heard that frontal lobe injuries can cause this sort of thing - but there's still a lot about the brain that neuroscientists haven't figured out yet.

Its not always negative - there have been cases of non-artistic people suddenly developing an interest and ability in art after a severe head injury. Its very strange.

If a brain injury can make someone say negative, incoherent sh!t, I'm wondering if you could theoretically knock some sense into someone? I'm thinking about some potential candidates for a good whack to the head.
