It's an interesting question, how much of one's purchase $ remains within the local community and what those $ buy. How cheap is cheap?

There are some larger chains that support community projects, or at least claim to as well.

Personally, I like independent stores and restaurants. It's so boring going into a grocery store to be faced with aisle upon aisle of over processed junk foods. It is actually cheaper to buy raw ingredients and produce your own meals at home - oh but we all know this really...
