I think that someone should add to this post regarding aquiring a SSN. I followed the directions, however I applied after I got married. No mention is made of before or after marriage and applying with my married name before the AOS had gone through caused a delay. My letter says:

This is to acknoledge that you applied for a Social Security number on 'date'.

Before we can issue you a Social Security number card, we must verify the document(s) you gave us to show your citizenship or alien status with the Federal, State, or local office in the United States that issued the document(s). This may take up to four weeks.

If that office verifies the authenticity of your document(s) we will mail you a Social Security number card. If that office does not verify your document(s), you are not eligible for a Social Security number card and we will inform you of this in writing.

I believe I should have either applied before I got married and then put in a name change or applied after but applied in my maiden name and then after getting the card, done the name change. Or waited until the AOS which delays it anyway.

Does anyone have experience with this? Anyway, it's too late for me, I'm hoping that they confirm my documents, even though they have not received my AOS yet.

At least by using the letter, the company that my husband uses for medical is using that to prove I have applied even though I don't have a card. I was also able to get on my husband's bank account with only my marriage certificate and birth certificate and filling out a special form.

The documentation to apply for SSN for K-1 visa applicants could more clearly say what to do in regards to your married status and name change and order of applying etc.

Thanks! Just thought I'd post this as a warning for others, I don't know the best way and I have read all the forums and each person has a different experience.

I am certainly happy to be here and be married! All this paper work was worth the wonderful man I now have as my husband!

Your marriage status has nothing to do with whether or not you qualify. They might try to tell you that but it's not true. Right now your status is based on your I-94 so as long as you went to get your SSN at least 2-3 weeks before the expiration of your I-94 then you are good to go.

I also applied after I got married and they gave me the same letter and said that they would have to check with immigration and I should hear something in 4-6 weeks. I got my card in the mail about 8 days later.

You should probably get something in the mail soon.

I live in Saint Louis and I got my SSN only after I received my EAD. I went to the SS office thrice before I got lucky. In some states, they just issue SSN even before you get married, if you came here in K1 visa.

I think there must be some confusions going on...

Do you know why the SSA office could not verify your status? I would try to find out why. If there is a just a one letter misspelling of your name or if your maiden name verifies and you are applying with your married name, the SSA office can process the application without further verification.
