Hired a lawyer before when we were doing our K1.

Paid $1500 and if my fiancee fails the interview, there is a money back guarantee.

He was good lawyer though. Everything went smooth and within the time estimates that he predicted.

But with AOS, we did it all by ourselves. Thanks to VJ. :)

I agree with what everyone else has said,, regarding the lawyer. If I made more then $300 per hour maybe a lawyer

might be worth it. But,,, He will not double and triple check everything like I would. And an RFE because of a typo

or just plain missing something. Would make the cost a hard slap in the face. Mostly cause you paid for their

mistake,,, twice,,, in $$$ and time.

Use a lawyer for problems,,, not a secretary filling out forms.

Good Luck,

THOUSANDS !!!!!! but i was my own lawyer and ripped myself off !!! :P when i started all of this i looked into getting a lawyer and got costs from $2000 and up. Then after a little research i realised all they did was fill in the forms with info I had to give them was like nothing i didn't know so decided i'll do it myself ...

Maybe i'll lowball all the lawyers and offer help with forms for like 200 bucks .. hehehe

My next door neighbor has already paid her lawyer $32,000 and the blood sucking leech just sent her another $5,000 retainer bill.

Here's the background: She came to the US as a tourist in 1991 and stayed with her brother. Before going back home, she decided to stay here permanently. CIS sent her a deportation hearing notice but they sent it to the wrong address. :bonk: They messed up the house number, so she never got it. So she just kept living here illegally. A year ago, her brother filed an I-130 and 485 on her behalf. CIS would not approve it and requested a hearing. She had a hearing with an immigration judge, and he ordered them to grant her a greencard since she entered legally and in his opinion, she did not enter with the intent to stay like CIS believes. CIS is now appealing the judge's decision, so now they have to go to an appeals court.

Back to the blood-sucking lawyer. So she has given him just about all her savings and now he wants the rest of it. And who knows how much longer they will drag this out.

She called him to ask about where her case is and was told that they would not discuss it anymore or even open her file until they receive the $5,000 retainer.

My husband wasnt comfortable with doing it ourselves eventough his mom had immigrated her husband like 20 yrs ago by herself, the only problem they had was when they went to Cd Juarez for his interview they scammed them. Some guy told his step-dad that the paperwork was filled out wrong and yada yada yada... they payed 1500 for that.

But I had to call around and found a person for 500 (we are doing the 'one step' AOS from a tourist someone mentioned) we have not had a problem. My husband only found a flawn on the lady that did everything she talked a lot. My husband is one of those persons that if he's doing a bussines or something serius realted he is very picky if you all know what I mean. The other people that I hjad called wanted over 1000 dollars first payment they were very expensive, I am sure after this I will do the removal and citizenship on my own

$6000, on lawyer fees. She gave me a speech about my case being complicated, and that it was a big risk, she also said that since I had filed the I-130 the ICE already knew I was illegaly in the country and that if I did anything wrong they were gonna deport me. @ the time it felt like money well spent.. "protection money" After all i've learned I realized what a BIG mistake its been. I knew id have to file a waiver but I've been doing most of the work. The lawyer calls and tells me what she needs. sometimes she's not specific. & what pisses me off the most is that she will tell me one thing a day, when many things can be done in one day, needless to say, she's making the progress LONGER than it should have been. I was gonna pay the IV fees through the website, & she said it was a big risk. it took her 4 months to send the checks i wrotte, she kept saying that thats how long they take to clear payments. after reading, i realized IV fees payed within the site get acknowledged within 2 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thats just one of the stupid things i've dealt with in this Journey.

You have an IMMENSE support group here in VJ, and i've found Enough Information, and very knowledgeable people. If i had known then what i know now.... I would have bought a house with all the money i've spent. please note, i've been saving money for 7 years just to get me through this process.

OH and BTW, i'm thinking of becoming a paralegal, when i get back home. that way i dont get to keep the dirty stinky secrets lawyers keep, Because I really want to help people think outside the box, & not fall into the lies that lawyers put us through. the past 2 years of my life have been horrible. She constantly reminded me that i was to 'lay low" i havent even received a letter in my own mail box because of her. I feel like a persecuted christian in the middle of the roman empire.

We had a fairly straightforward and successful K1/AOS - we prepared and submittted all the paperwork ourselves and found everything we needed to know here on VJ

We had no RFE's and the entire process from KI petition to GC took just over a year

Next step is Removal Of Conditions

I have question!

Honestly we can fill out all forms ourselves, collect evidences and send. What else should we put in attention?

What actually the lawyer do? Just fill out the applications ?

I don't know if we should hire one?
