Hi everyone,

We are considering the option of hiring a lawyer to help us with the AOS process as we really don't have much time and energy to deal with it. The problem is that I was shocked when I asked today for a quote to a couple of them and they wanted to charge me $1500 and $1800 (not including the USCIS fees!!!).

Is it normal? How much did you pay for your lawyer if you used one?

Thanks!

I had a few early errors made by USCIS with my K1 - I paid 1500 for them to effectively expedite my petition.

EDIT. Just looked into my email and they quoted 1500 for AOS as well plus they wanted to be at the interview @300 an hour!

Obviously I did AOS myself. I will say they did successfully expedite my k1 so it was worth it for that.

I paid $1000.00 for the I-130 and my lawyer put my wife ;s name wrong on it

i had to fire him after i found out about it, lawyer for immigration u dont need it

just follow the guide in VJ and u can do it unless u have a complicated case,

good luck

Our time line for CR1 visa took only 5 months and 1 week or 156 days; from the filing the I-130 on the 03-12-2009 to Approval of NOA2 on the 05/13/2009, then Interview on the 08/18/2009 at Manila, Philippines. We had a daughter on the 11-12-2010 named AISHA JOY means HAPPY LIFE.a1_opt-1.jpga2_opt-1.jpga3_opt-1.jpg

I paid 1600 all in all with Cherry Blossoms. If i were you don't hire any lawyer. Just do it yourself. Most of the lawyers can't even give enough info that you need.

I'd say we spent 3 hours tops on the AOS package and prepping for the interview. We actually spent more time driving to the biometrics and interview which you would have to do anyway (unless your case is transfered).

That does sound like a typical quote. Other than filling in some forms you will have to do the evidence gathering so there isn't much of a time savings.

That being said, if you don't believe that you can get the submission done correctly the first time it may be money well spent if it avoids delays, RFE's.

:bonk: He knew the immigration process well but he went on a month vacation leaving our petition sitting on his desk.

That's a fair question. I am confident in one outfit that would certainly know what it is doing -- http://www.fosterquan.com -- the largest immigration-law firm in Houston. They helped me immensely on consular issues, and I got far more than what I paid for their (very reasonable) e-mail consultation fees. Take a look at their website and consider contacting or hiring them. I have no connection with the firm except the positive experience outlined above.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Thanks T-Bone, I don't live near Houston, would it be a problem?

We used a lawyer for the K-1 (for certain reasons), but did not use a lawyer for the AOS.

Our lawyer's fees for AOS are $800 if adjusting from a K visa, or $1400 if its a 'one step' adjustment (like from tourist).
