Removing Conditions and CA drivers license

Hello everyone,

I have searched this topic several times and still cannot find an answer to my question, so I'm hoping someone here that has been through the same problem can give me a heads up.

My conditional Green Card will expire on March 2011, and my CA driver's license will expire the same day (I heard some people were lucky and got a regular 5 year license, but unfortunately I wasn't).

That being said, since I commute 20 miles to work every day mon through fri, it would not be good for me if I wouldn't be able to renew my CA license once the time comes to file the I-751.

The CA DMV website shows the I-551 stamp as an accepted proof of eligibility, but doesn't say anything about extension letters (the one we receive after we file the I-751).

Has anyone gone through this before and what do I need to show to the DMV office when my license will expire?

Should I get a stamp on my passport for another year or the extension letter will suffice? Has anyone tried this in CA?

Thank you! :star:

I had the same issue. My CA license was due to expire when my 2 year green card did. I had not even noticed this when it was issued. I found out when I received a letter from DMV asking for evidence of my continued right to stay in the country.

I did not have a passport stamp. All I had was my extension letter received after filing the I751. I sent a copy of that to them and recieved a new license in the mail which expires on the day the one year extension runs out. So I imagine you will be ok sending the extension letter to get the new license in the same way I was. Things may change by 2011 though!

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much! I am already relieved :)

I know things might change in 2 years but hopefully they will continue accepting the extension letter as a proof. It's already a relief knowing you were able to have your license renewed for another year that way.

Thank you so much again!!

Rosie74, I have the same issue but mine is about to expire.

I will be submitting my I-751 in the next 2 weeks and my driver's license expire in December. I hope I the letter with 1 year extension will be enough to extend my driver's license.

DavidGolfer, I am also in California. Did you have to pay another fee to renew/extend the driver's license?
