The IRS mailed me the tax return transcripts for the last 3 years( I decided to send USCIS the tax return transcripts instead of the other 2 choices) I opened them immediately without realizing that maybe I should've kept them sealed while I submit my N-400. Does it matter the transcripts had been opened? If it matters, I would have to request them from IRS one more time :(

Thanks for suggestion.

There is no requirement that the tax transcripts be sealed. In fact, you should open them up when you get them to make sure the IRS actually sent you the correct ones. Otherwise, how would you know for sure?

We just sent regular copies of our returns (without W-2s) and the IO didn't ask my wife for the transcripts she brought to the interview.

I sent the original transcripts and made a copy for my files. Yes, definitely open them - you need to make sure you got the correct information.

Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 to order the transcripts. It takes about a week to get them once you've placed the order.

Yes, no need to send sealed transcripts. My SSN was incorrect on two of the three! I had to get replacements.

As an aside, when we got our federal tax refund check this year, someone else's check was attached to ours! Instead of sending it back to the IRS, I just sent it directly to the person as her address was on the check. I figured the recipient would probably wait a month before she got it if I mailed it back to the IRS. She actually tracked me down and thanked me profusely so I guess I did the right thing.

Well done CanAmCharlotte!! That was a great decision! Going back thru the IRS would have delayed things a lot. Whenever you send me a check, I'll be thanking you profusely also!! :P
