8-year old girl raped, disowned by family - four boys ages 9-14 arrested

The summer scene at a west Phoenix apartment complex was tranquil Wednesday evening. Parents and children chatted on their stoops as the sun set. They bought ice cream from a vendor's push cart.

One week ago, around the same time of day, residents of the complex were startled by the screams of a partially clothed 8-year-old girl who ran screaming from a storage shed at a vacant unit.

Phoenix police on Wednesday announced that they arrested four neighborhood boys in connection with the incident, in which investigators said the group lured the girl into the shed with chewing gum, held her down and sexually assaulted her.

...

The girl and the four suspects are refugees from the war-torn West African country of Liberia.

...

Arizona Child Protective Services took custody of the girl after the July 16 incident at the apartment complex after her parents disowned her.

Hill said the parents blamed her for being victimized and bringing shame to the family.

...

Phoenix investigators are requesting that the oldest suspect, age 14, be prosecuted as an adult.

He and the three others - ages 9, 10 and 13 - were taken to a Maricopa County juvenile-detention center late Tuesday.

...

They "took turns" in the attack, the shed door opening as different boys entered.

How terribly sad, for all concerned. Obviously their experiences in Liberia have created personality defects that should have been adressed (assuming they were not of course). It's hard to imagine thinking simply plucking people out of terrible circumstances brings closure on previous experience. Terribly sad.

Here we go...

oh wise one what do you suggest we do.

I leave it to the law to determine the appropriate punishment - though I don't believe in prosecuting minors as adults.

If you seriously think that castrating children (albeit children who have committed a terrible crime) is a reasonable course of action, then perhaps you should move to Liberia, or Somalia - where you can indulge such fantasies.

The sad part really is how this little girl's family disowned her. THAT is the worst part of this whole story.

I swear I'd like to meet the doctor who is able to crack open the nut some of these Right Wingers have for a brain and discovers what's inside. They've got to be hanging on to some Neanderthal genes in there.

No, the worst part is that families who have been transported to supposed safety where left without the means to adapt to their new environment. The actions of the children and the parents are all inappropriate. It probably could have all been avoided with proper guidance.
