Say you make $50000 a year but your employer doesn't offer health insurance (not all employers do you know). If you had to insure your family privately, it would probably cost around $1200 a month. That's $14,400 per year - nearly 30% of your gross wages.

Insurance wouldn't cost that much if you're single. If you're married with kids, then assuming your spouse has a job, the numbers are more like 2 x $50,000 = $100,000; 15% of your gross ages.

Median household income in the US is just over $50K.

Fine, but the median annual cost of insurance coverage is $5,352 (as of 2008).

Coverage per person or per household? What median co-pay's and deductibles would apply?

Thought we were getting screwed, we are paying more than twice that amount. Is that one of those plans that pays your 500 bucks if you lose an eye? $750 if you lose both? Any exclusions like any health related issues?

Right. Employer sponsored family insurance averages in the 12K-14K range - those plans carry an average of $1,500 annual deductible. I doubt that one could buy a cheaper plan individually that would offer similar coverage. You can, most certainly, buy a plan for much less that's good as long as you don't need it.

Our plan has a million buck per year limit that just about covers a single office visit.

Mark - I know lots of families where both work and the combined income is $50000.

Point taken; still $1,200 a month seems a little too expensive for the average family.

If you were to buy a REAL plan that covers real stuff, I don't think it's out of the ballpark. Gary put up a link for a company called Cynergy where premiums are far lower. I haven't had a chance to really look at the coverage or read up on patient satisfaction with payment of claims, etc. All I know for certain is that the COBRA premium for the good Aetna coverage the husband had before he lost his job was $902 per month. That was coverage for employee and spouse - not a family plan.

I've seen the drive by Cynergy commercials on Late Night TV. And you know what they say about that.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I see it as the start of the market reacting to the health insurance problem. Right now it is infomercials but later mainstream choices will be available.
