If he's going to be a vegetable, no - my answer is "C"; otherwise - "A".

What if the procedure has an uncertain outcome, with only a 50% chance of Jim being a vegetable?

Then I'll flip a coin to decide "A" or "C"

So knowing he has a 50% chance of survival in a state other than that of a vegetable, you'd be willing to kill him based on the flip of a coin?

Nah, I was just kidding - no need to flip a coin if his chances of survival are already 50%.

I'd pull the plug if the procedure failed and made him a vegetable.

are you trying to illustrate to us, that as long as someone else is making our heathcare decisions for us. NOONE will be 100% satisfied?

I'm saying there's no way to be fair to everyone no matter who's making the decisions. You gotta pick your poison.

Make him play Mortal Kombat. If he dies, he can come back as Scorpion.

I wouldn't. I'd use paper-rock-scissors.

Or roll the dice. Snake eyes --> Jim dies.

Maybe we could turn it into a game show. "Is that your final answer?" :star:

Reality TV of the future. Very frightening.

Jim is 50. Jim has a disease. Jim's doctors are confident the disease can be controlled and he can live but he will never be able to work again. Without treatment, Jim will die within 6 months.

Jim works as the overnight cashier at a 24 hour convenience store. He has no medical insurance. He has a high school education with no other marketable skills. He works a lot of overtime and his annual wages exceed, by a very small amount, the income limits of Medicaid eligibility.

That is already a contradiction, not being able to work, then working making too much money.

He currently works.

With treatment, he will live but won't be able to work anymore.

Without treatment, he will die.

Which disease does Jim have? Most are transitional with some having a very long painful death and debilitating at that. If it is such a transitional disease, Jim won't be working for very long, but well before he dies. We are talking about a disease, correct? Not a condition, like a heart condition, there you can pop the cork at any time.

Why is it that the only one who can stop the crying is the one who started it in the first place?

ok, who pays for the funeral?

From SoCal:

More bodies go unclaimed as families can't afford funeral costs

36% more cremations were done at taxpayers' expense in the last fiscal year over the previous year, from 525 to 712.

...

Once the county cremates an unclaimed body -- typically about a month after death -- next of kin can pay the coroner $352 to receive the ashes. The fee for claiming ashes from the morgue is $466.
