I retract my statement

Will you tell a patient that "there would be no reason for him to live"?

LaL would you want to live like that? Have you ever been to a nursing home? Sitting in a nursing home as a vegetable and not even knowing what's going on around you isn't a life. It's a place you go while waiting to die because no one else can take care of you anymore.

So there would be no reason for him to live, in your opinion (assuming based on your question above).

If he's going to be a vegetable, no - my answer is "C"; otherwise - "A".

There should probably also be an option F.

Not content with letting him die of his condition, Jim's inability to pay for his own care (through lifelong laziness of not aspiring to college and a better job) should be the basis of criminal charges for wasting people's time and for not being able to take care of himself.

The sentence: death by hanging, drawing and quartering.

That'd be on YouTube in no time flat.

What if the procedure has an uncertain outcome, with only a 50% chance of Jim being a vegetable?

Then I'll flip a coin to decide "A" or "C"

So knowing he has a 50% chance of survival in a state other than that of a vegetable, you'd be willing to kill him based on the flip of a coin?

I wouldn't. I'd use paper-rock-scissors.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Jim is 50. Jim has a disease. Jim's doctors are confident the disease can be controlled and he can live but he will never be able to work again. Without treatment, Jim will die within 6 months.

Jim works as the overnight cashier at a 24 hour convenience store. He has no medical insurance. He has a high school education with no other marketable skills. He works a lot of overtime and his annual wages exceed, by a very small amount, the income limits of Medicaid eligibility.

That is already a contradiction, not being able to work, then working making too much money. Then the only choices given is what other people should do, what does Jim want? Then the diagnoses by the doctor, I kown people that were told that 30 years ago and are still kicking leading happy lives, but also know people that came into work strong and healthy one day, and were stone dead the next.

Even after my accident, was told I would be crippled up in a wheel chair in four years, that was 15 years ago, running all over the place today and kicking butt, and happier than hell.

Only problem with your hypothesis is assumptions are made.

The outcome of few procedures is 100%. If you have a serious, life-threatening condition I'd imagine you get used to dealing with long odds.

Or roll the dice. Snake eyes --> Jim dies.

Might this be Jim, by chance?

Maybe we could turn it into a game show. "Is that your final answer?" :star:
