It just goes back to this idea of a society where noone helps anyone else - what kind of national cohesion can you get from such a philosophy? For a country supposedly built on Christian values, this law of the jungle stuff seems rather brutal and bleak.

I don't think anyone can deny we have been off "Those" values for some time now.

But on the bright side there are still enough of those religious folk out there that many, if not most charities to the poor... Food banks, shelters, pregnancy centers, rehab centers are run or mostly staffed by one faith based group or another.

We have also all seen the stats which show Religious people by far contribute more time and money to social causes.. (apart from their house of faith.) Than non believers.

Church groups in this country alone are responsible for medical clinics, schools and training centers by the thousands across third world countries, ... all paid for out of the pockets of average americans.

Now I do understand,

Many non-religious people feel the need to "come together" and collectively fix this problem and often the gravitate to the government for this.

Many others (like me) are used to "coming together" with groups and getting things done.

For us, the Gov is not the Natural centerpoint.

For you, the problem is SO BIG only the Gov can handle it, it me; the Problem is so big the GOVERNMENT BETTER NOT try.

After all who among us would trade the plan we now have for a treatment plan offered by the Veterans Administration Hospital?

Yeah the "government is bad, will always be bad and can only ever be bad" thing, I get it. I've heard it a thousand times before. Makes me wonder why people bother to vote if they have such disdain for the people they are voting for and the public offices they are elected to serve.

But a practical question springs to mind.

How exactly do you think that healthcare reform can be drawn up and implemented if noone steps up to take the lead on the issue or to coordinate things?

Leaving aside the soundbites, that does seem to be a pretty big flaw in your thinking...

Murder is illegal. Usury is illegal (except the credit card companies have a loophole). We legislate morality all the time.

Whatever you say Fidel!

Interesting response. I take it you think Communism is moral?

For the record, I disagree :)

You asked why we are hashing out the ins & outs of SSI/SSDI - it's because you said a flip comment that only adds to misconceptions about the program. There is a whole slew of medical issues that can preclude someone from working or taking care of themselves that arent clear cut. They can and sometimes do take years to get through the system.

Wot?

Unbelievable!

"Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard".

 you tried, but had nothing.

and Lal, my first comment(the one you say was so flip) was for mediCAID. Then you brought Medicare into the conversation. :)

What is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a jointly funded, Federal-State health insurance program for low-income and needy people. It covers children, the aged, blind, and/or disabled and other people who are eligible to receive federally assisted income maintenance payments.

Thirty-two states and the District of Columbia provide Medicaid eligibility to people eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI ) benefits. In these States, the SSI application is also the Medicaid application. Medicaid eligibility starts the same months as SSI eligibility.

"you fondle my trigger then you blame my gun"

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

I would not want Shooter as my Dr though. He appears not to have any empathetic skills and has a wandering moral compass. He also seems to believe suicide by hand gun is not only a reasonable, but the most 'honorable' choice for people facing such circumstances. Perhaps he would have a spare hand gun in his surgery should the need arise?

sorry to be late in responding. i was busy chasing the bunny around the ranch last night.

Dr Shooter has lots of empathy. he cares about you all. he is also practical, and has a living will allowing his wife to pull the plug should he be unable to. he has discussed the issue with her in depth, and she has a similar document. he also firmly believes in his right to pull his own plug.

Dr Shooter watched his mother die a miserable death after a double radical (1976) failed to stop 6 sentinel node responders from propogating a metastinisation of cancer cells in her body. she suffered for 7 long cripled years in the family home and eventually died of pneumonia when Dr Shooter was 19.

Dr Shooter had empathy for her, and wishes that she had not suffered so long. he wishes that his father had handled the situation differently. his father kept her out of treatment, so prolonging her life of misery. Dr Shooter knows enough about morphine from his own personal travails to understand that a morphine overdose is a pleasant way to go, and would have been the ordinary result for his mother's affliction.
