I'm a USC preparing to file for my parents' I-130 and in the process of gathering all the required documents. Even though I haven't submitted the application yet, I wanted to be proactive and find out how I can get them a good health insurance? My dad is 59 and my mom is 61 with no pre-existing health conditions. They don't plan on working when they get here so I was wondering what my options are regarding health insurance?

For those who brought their elderly parents to the US, what did you guys do about health insurance?

I know this is a little off topic but I'm not sure where to post it. Please feel free to move it where appropriate or let me know if there's a better section where to post this kind of question. Thank You!

I have set up health insurance for my parents, it will start as soon as they arrive here in the US. Your parents will need to buy private medical insurance and it is not cheep for anyone over 55.

My parents are 66 and 65 and to get good coverage for them it is going to cost $1054.00 per month.. once they have been in the USA for 5 years they can buy into medicare, that will cost them $443.00 each per month just for the hospital care (Part A) they would still need to get coverage for Part B and for RX.

It is not cheap and the amounts I have listed are for 2009 only they will go up every year.

Thanks TayRivers! $1054 each or for both? May I ask which insurance company just so I can start looking into it?

It is $1054 for both. The company we have chosen is Fallon Community Health, I dont know if they are available in your state. Here in Massachusetts it is compulsory for everyone to have health insurance, so the insurance companies can not exclude pre-existing conditions or new immigrants. I know in other states they will not insure new immigrants until they have been in the US for more than 6 months.

Thanks again! At least now I know where to start. I really appreciate your help. =)
