Getting Work Authorization at the point of entry with K1 VISA

You're referring to an EAD stamp that you can get at JFK. Honestly, it's of no use to you. The stamp is a physical proof that the entrant is eligible to apply for a SS number and it's a physical confirmation to the entrant they are eligible to apply with the Service for an EAD. But now that the I9's rules have changed, it is not worth more than that.

If your flight happens to be going through JFK than I would suggest getting it. At the very least you can apply for your social security card and apply for jobs. Although depending on when you file your AOS you will not be able to work between the time the EAD expires from entry to when you get issued one from doing your AOS.

my fiance entered on a K1. i saw this same conversation many times here prior to his POE, as i shared this same concern. there may be a new law; however, my husband didn't request a stamp and they put it on his I-94 anyway. most jobs where he applied would not accept the stamp. luckily, one place did and we now have 2 incomes. hallelujah!

it seems like it's a toss-up. best wishes for everybody coming through!

You don't even need it for SS anymore just wait two weeks before heading to your local office. If you need to work I'd suggest either delaying your entry slightly and do some heavy saving or see if your current employer will allow you to work remotely for awhile.

Is it true that you can request for a temporary work authorization at the point of entry which I believe will expire when the K1 Visa expires (90 days)?

There is no "temporary work authorization" for K-1s. It doesn't matter about the stamp. The stamp is only valid in conjunction with another type of specific work visa which the K-1 is NOT.

K-1s must have an EAD or Green Card to work.

It is not a toss up. Your husband is working illegally and his employer is clueless. This does not make it legal. This may or may not be overlooked at the AOS.

There is no "new law". There was a clarification of the existing law which was implemented February 2 of this year and took effect in April. The K-1 no longer has the necessary documentation for the I-9 form. It is possible his employer had some old I-9 forms around, again this does not make it legal.

It is not necessary to request the stamp. Our oldest son (K-2 to follow) was given this stamp when he arrived 6 days ago. It is meaningless and a waste of ink for a K-1/K-2.

Either way (see discussion in locked thread about one week old below) they need to stop work this week since it looks like their 1 -94 expires.

The stamp has never been needed at the Social Security office.

The stamp given by JFK is a clarification of the incident work status of a K1 beneficiary

If the stamp was never meant for work authorization, then it must have been meant as clarification to the SS office at some point in the past no? What other purpose did it hold?
