A USC does not need a visa, just their passport. Nothing to worry about.

That makes no sense. Did the person asking know you were a USC when they asked?

i got a visa with my picture on it along with the tickets i bought here in the US. When i went back to the US, they asked for the visa at HCM airport. Now, im confused, I actually don't remember clearly if they took the visa when i enter Vietnam or coming back to the US

You got a visa to enter Vietnam. You didn't need a visa to enter the US with your US passport. Your son doesn't need a visa.

I believed you're talking about the vietnam visa, you need it to enter vietnam and they collect it when you leave vietnam. however, Your son don't have one 'cause he is in vietnam and never been to U.S. So no, he doesn't need one. My friend, his wife and kid have no problem when they leave vietnam.... No worry, Congratz again!!

I think that they are not understanding your son's status. He has a US passport.

I have not heard anyone else talk about the VN citizen having anything about their child in their passport. Maybe someone in the same situation will confirm.

@Anhmap : yes, vietnam passport can fill out name of son/daughter under 6 years old in passport of mother or father at Phong Xuat Nhap Canh in Vietnam. I have been done Vietnam passport for my son although he got US passport.

@Calilove : Im sure if yr son dont have Vietnam passport so he can not leave Vietnam, it is hard . Trust me. You say your wife go to Phong Xuat Nhap Canh where she got her passport and ask how to do new passort for your son. That is easier than fill out your son's name on your financee's passport.

I haven't heard of that before.

Is it a requirement or just something to make it easier at passport control?

I know that some of the passport control officers try to make things difficult for the departing Vietnamese.

I just emailed the US Citizen Services inside the US embassy to ask these questions to make sure.
