"Why, because I'm a black man in America?" Gates said, according to a police report written by Sgt. James Crowley. The Cambridge police refused to comment on the arrest Monday.

No, because you're twit who made your money solely on your racial background and can't see anything else in life.

"Gates continued to yell at me, accusing me of racial bias and continued to tell me that I had not heard the last of him," the officer wrote.

He was arrested on a disorderly conduct charge after police said he "exhibited loud and tumultuous behavior." He was released later that day on his own recognizance. An arraignment was scheduled for Aug. 26.

He came off as an a-hole to the cops and they just love bringing celebs down a notch.

Try mouthing off to the police for a traffic ticket and then see happens regardless of your race.

Yah, same here BUT it would be after I showed them WHO I was and thanked them for watching out for my stuff. THEN if they kept up the BS I would blow my stack at that point. This guy like most started right off the bat with RACIST RACIST RACIST attitude, it happens that way MOST of the time.

Oh, come ON. If that isn't a generalization I don't know what is.

The man is a professional and highly rational. It is not his modus operandi to go around jumping the gun and flying off the handle without provocation. None of us have any knowledge of what went down to precipitate all this. Honestly.

and you know this how? true

but it is with cops??? Interesting that you give the professer a higher pedestal, you dont become a cop by filling out a question form on the back of a cracker jack box. It is as high and respectable job as a professor. We need to find out all the facts and thats what it comes down too.

Moral outrage doesn't go over well with the undereducated jock douchebags who typically gravitate towards careers in law enforcement. In their minds, they can do no wrong. Too bad for the rest of us, they're armed to the teeth and wrong.

Kind of like Republicans.

I love you.

:o

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

First off, if the police received a break-in call, surprised they didn't run the other way.

Second, all Gates had to do was to be nice and identify himself, that would have been the end of it. Instead, he has to make smarta$ remarks about his race.

Third, he should fix his door.

Forth, he should meet his neighbors so they know who he is.

Much ado about nothing, so typical today.

But you don't have the whole story to come to those conclusions. You're just going by second-hand hearsay.

This is OT. Where hearsay replaces fact and experts are borne out of opinions. :D

#######? Are you kidding me...people are actually agreeing w/ the police on this one???

Well yes of course, what good reason did this professor have for getting a attidude and pulling out the race card right away. They were there too help him. People here sometimes really amaze me. Where you guys dropped on your head as a kid.

Sorry, but if anyone came over and accused me of trying to get into MY house, there will be plenty of attitude on my part. Count on that. And, for those who do not know prof. Gates from Adam, he is one of the most kind and non-chalant academics you will ever meet: not a diva, so your theory just does not fly. And yes, I know ####### I am talking about.

And surely police officers can interact in a mature manner with members of the public that pose no harm to them without being dumb@sses themselves. I mean the guy is a Harvard professor after all.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

again what does that do? it sure doesn't automatically make him a saint. we have more than a few 'professionals' here on VJ that are quick to be a$$holes & pull the race card whenever it suits them.

I actually do know him - since 1996-, reason why I tell you the police really fvcked up this one. The whole thing is bullsh1t.

Puhleaze

PWNED!!!!

now they are going to question the veracity of this statement

how weird is this? those that are siding with the police are GOPs and we who are siding with the scholar are liberals, oh dear coincidence maybe?

Actually not, so LEN knew him...people know people there have been many cases where neighbors and friends of MURDERERS say "he was such a nice man" or "who would have thought" so knowing someone doesn't mean ####### when it comes to any certain situation they may be involved in.

And i'm not a GOP but apparently you seem to belong to the "bleeding heart liberal" crowd. You know the ones who say the cops where racist if they do what they did now...or if they just took his word he was the Prof and it actually was a burglar and the burglar ended up killing the Prof after the cops left the scene because they didn't do their job and catch the criminal

Know, the correct tense is know. Skip was one of my external readers in graduate school. And he is not one to go around screaming at people, berating students and/or staff. this is a man that has decades studying victim mentality and how it has affected African American identity politics. But how I obviously cannot expect you to even know that. I am sure you think this is a dude that teaches English 100 at a technical college in Appalachia.

And yes, I would give Professor Gates the benefit of the doubt over the cops; any day, and twice on Sundays. His comments and questions to my own research were always poignant but quite enriching. this is NOT a dude that gets off on power trips. He is bigger, way bigger than that.

Certainly- as they also pull the generalized politico card and all other cards in the deck.

Lets focus on the two wrongs part. Let the police do their job, and don't let them abuse their authority when its based on incomplete information.

No, because you're twit who made your money solely on your racial background and can't see anything else in life.

Be careful when you're pointing fingers. There's more pointing back at you.

He came off as an a-hole to the cops and they just love bringing celebs down a notch.

How do you know they didn't come across that way with him and he was just responding to their approach and defending himself?

He is a well-known scholastic figure schooled in what it's like to be a black man in America. Every black man..... especially a black man from his era.... knows the consequences of negative interaction with those in authority. Unless he temporarily lost his sanity or is suffering from dementia, I find it difficult to believe that he would put himself in harm's way.

You're putting words in my mouth. I did not say that.

This is in fact what many officers do once establishing there is no crime to book. Temporarily detain and release with an apology once clearing the 'suspect.' I smell a bit of individualistic attitude from the professor (health, arrogance, racial defensiveness based on likely history of facing racism in the past, etc) and attitude from the arresting officers wanting to show him a lesson for daring to snap back at them. Both are guilty or overreacting, but the police in this case overstepped their authority.

bump

Oh my... bump #2
