for the most part I was joking around, I seen you bringing the neighbor in as a possibility but not likely. You did after all hint to the idea that she knew her neighbor and still called. The matter of the fact is that there is alot we dont know about this situation.

You misinterpreted then. I was not suggesting anything, I was simply trying to find out if in fact an attempted burglary had occurred, or if the woman, on seeing someone trying to 'apparently' force a door, she assumed it was burglary because, despite being a neighbour, she didn't recognize him.

You should know, I apparently don't do joking around and I am pissy this week.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

What I want to know is, did the woman actually see a break in, or did she assume that because someone she didn't recognize (him being a neighbour and all) tried to get in and couldn't and then went around the back when he failed to open the front door was a break in?

No according to the article, she (the woman assumed to be a neighbor) "reported seeing 'two black males with backpacks on the porch,' with one 'wedging his shoulder into the door as if he was trying to force entry.'

I'd be curious to know how long Gates has lived in that house...that his neighbors don't know him.

Anyway, he should have shot himself for breaking and entering. That's what the average NRA member would have done.

#######? Are you kidding me...people are actually agreeing w/ the police on this one???

Well yes of course, what good reason did this professor have for getting a attidude and pulling out the race card right away. They were there too help him. People here sometimes really amaze me. Where you guys dropped on your head as a kid.

Sorry, but if anyone came over and accused me of trying to get into MY house, there will be plenty of attitude on my part. Count on that. And, for those who do not know prof. Gates from Adam, he is one of the most kind and non-chalant academics you will ever meet: not a diva, so your theory just does not fly. And yes, I know ####### I am talking about.

Yah, same here BUT it would be after I showed them WHO I was and thanked them for watching out for my stuff. THEN if they kept up the BS I would blow my stack at that point. This guy like most started right off the bat with RACIST RACIST RACIST attitude, it happens that way MOST of the time.

No matter what his mood, his illness, or his status, Professor Gates should have shown them his ID and nothing more would have occurred. Whenever any law enforcement officer requests your ID, it's good judgement to show it and be polite. Granted, there are misfits on any police force. In this case, they responded to a legitimate call and I am sure the caller is just as embarrassed as anyone, even though she probably did the right thing given that it was dark out and who could see clearly what was happening. Cambridge is a wonderful city but it's not crime-free by any means.

She saw clearly enough to identify "two black men w/ backpacks" with one seemingly trying to force entry to the door w/ his shoulder. If it was that dark, she saw a little too much. ;)

Oh, come ON. If that isn't a generalization I don't know what is.

The man is a professional and highly rational. It is not his modus operandi to go around jumping the gun and flying off the handle without provocation. None of us have any knowledge of what went down to precipitate all this. Honestly.

PWNED!!!!

now they are going to question the veracity of this statement

how weird is this? those that are siding with the police are GOPs and we who are siding with the scholar are liberals, oh dear coincidence maybe?

Actually not, so LEN knew him...people know people there have been many cases where neighbors and friends of MURDERERS say "he was such a nice man" or "who would have thought" so knowing someone doesn't mean ####### when it comes to any certain situation they may be involved in.

And i'm not a GOP but apparently you seem to belong to the "bleeding heart liberal" crowd. You know the ones who say the cops where racist if they do what they did now...or if they just took his word he was the Prof and it actually was a burglar and the burglar ended up killing the Prof after the cops left the scene because they didn't do their job and catch the criminal
