My experience of traveling in the impoverished world--usually people and children in particular will smile at the rare occurrence of seeing a foreigner in such out of the way places--especially an American or other person that is different than the normal--and then add to that this is a New York Times reporter with camera and everything--who wouldn't smile when told to say cheese.

One thing to keep in mind about portrait photography:

Usually, a photographer will snap a series of frames, and not just one shot. These are the selections the photographer chose to publish. There were likely many different shots of each group of subjects, some that may have shown smiles (or other facial expressions) and some that didn't.

I must say, they are all quite striking and beautifully photographed portraits, no matter if you approve or disapprove of the subjects. The photographer is quite gifted.

Well, they are married, so I'd assume that it is that kind of benefits...

My dad was 20 when he married his first wife, who was 12 at the time. Needless to say, it's a loveless marriage. She pretty much hates him (but would never say so of course).

I think the first pic says it all...she's playing peek a boo and her hubby is like 60 years old. That's so...I don't know...upsetting. She looks like the kind of girl who sleeps with a teddy bear, not with an old ### man...ewwwww...
