Quick question...

I'm totally hating my job right now and we are waiting for our K1 visa at the moment (probably another couple months) I want to quit so I can go to the US for a month or so and spend some time with family back in canada before our paper work come through. Is there any chance I can qualify for EI?

No, probably not.

Firstly you can't quit too early, you won't have a visa so you can't prove that you are moving to be with your spouse. There was another person here on VJ who quit a month before moving, I believe it was - and their claim was denied.

So you're quitting just to go visit? I would highly doubt you'd qualify. I'm confused... are you in the US or Canada right now? Check out the EI thread tacked at the top of this section for some insight, and also this: http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/dige..._0.shtml#a6_4_1

It's a list of the legitimate reasons you could leave a job voluntarily (i.e. quit instead of being fired or laid off) and possibly still qualify.

*edit*

oh... sorry... apparently some other people gave you the same info at the same time basically.. lol

Also... yes, you would be quitting FAR too early to maintain your reasoning to quit for your pending move and marriage.... trust me, I hate my job too and would quit in a heartbeat if I thought it wouldn't screw everything up.

I think there has been cases where EI is denied because one quits their job too early before moving down to US, Service Canada see it as unnecessary for one to quit months before moving. Most suggest to quit one week before moving down to safely claim EI.

Ype quitting to far in advance is not good! as wel if ur gettign EI in canada, if one goes to visit--in other words not looking for work, ur suppose to infor the EI people, thus no $$$$

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Not only do you not quit until you have your visa and are thinking of moving, when applying, you need to have your ROE, and a copy of your visa, your I-94 etc. and even then, you can't collect benefits until you have your EAD or GC, so no, you won't be eligible.

Yes keep in mind, even when you do move on a K1 visa, you have to wait until you get you EAD and can fax then a copy in order to collect.

You cannot quit now and start collecting, it would not be approved.

Im sure one could collect EI in canada, the regular way,lol but I belive if one QUITS there job, just for the sake of quitting (not relocating), then ur not eligible
