Also "knew" moms and dads, knew, in the sense they are long gone. But in all fairness to the OP without knowing the background, "knew" and "new" are pronounced precisely the same. Go through this every day with a second language wife and daughter, they are trying very fervently to learn the English language.

Can anyone here explain why knew and new have the same identical pronunciation, but spelled differently with entirely different meanings?

I don't have the answer, but asked that all the time. Can only say, I did not invent the English language, just had to learn how to live with it. And how it's used in a sentence makes a world of difference.
