So I'm a UK citizen living in the US now and am waiting for my permanent green card. I am due to have my baby next week. So I know I need to get the birth certificate, social security. But when it comes to the baby's passport, do i get a US passport, UK passport or both? so that the baby can travel to the UK in a couple of months. Please let me know. I can't find anything on the net about it. Thanks in advance.

We are in the same situation- we have applied for the US passport and the UK passport. Though the UK one is not essential, it's the best thing in terms of proof of UK citizenship. I was told this by our local British consulate- they said don't bother registering the birth in the UK, just apply for a British passport, which serves as proof of the baby's British citizenship (if you want that).

As I said, you don't need to get it. And neither the US or UK authorities care whether you are getting dual citizenship so don't worry too much about that. Just make sure the baby comes and goes from the US on the US passport.

Here's how you apply for the British passport while you are in the UK (the application is handled by the embassy in DC):

FYI: If you do get the British one- send your application via UPS or Fed Ex- the post office just lost mine!

Hi Uk2usa,

Sorry that I can't help you with the UK passport issue, as I'm not a UK citizen (lol..I'm Canadian..and we share the same queen and English grammar structure, does that count?). Maybe other VJers can help more with this UK passport issue? Perhaps you can try contacting the UK Embassy, Consulate, or Immigration agency about this as well?

While you are waiting for a UK passport for your newborn, you can still get them a US passport, as they are US citizen by birth. So if all else fails, at least they can travel to the UK with that, without any problems.

Anyways, I'm mainly here to say....Congratulations in advance for your newborn baby!

What a co-incidence, as likewise, my baby is due next week too! When exactly are you due?

Feel free to pm me if you want to talk more about baby/newborn issues, immigration issues, or other issues too.

Good luck with the rest of your immigration journey and good luck in getting your newborn's travel documents sorted out.

I applied for my newborn's (at 2 months old) US passport and received it in exactly 2 weeks with standard processing.

Tip: You might find it hard and stressful getting newborn passport photos taken in a store, so we did them ourselves using a standard point and shoot digital camera and passport photo software downloaded from the net for about $10. It was easy and stress free. Wish we did it at start of immigration process as it would've saved trips to the store and a few $.

We are now in the process of applying for Australian citizenship and then we will apply for the Australian passport. Same deal with UK and Ca by sounds of it.

Newborn applications are much more fun than your own

Good luck with it.
