I think the story is inspiring, the boy is doing his little share to help in a very bad situation. When he grows up, he will remember that he did what he could to help his family, and hopefully it will make him feel good

I tried to infuse such wisdom about 8 pages ago and got slammed by the 'stop being a hippie' crowd.

Oh well. As I said before, charity is a strong tenet of my Catholic faith. I have raised my children this way and I fully understand why this boy was doing what he did. There are examples that he's done similar things before (to help Katrina victims and then again to help Cali wildfire victims). Clearly the parents have done something right to raise a child with this compassion.

Those who think it's wrong are certainly free to have that belief. I, and clearly several others, think this boy is doing a good thing and his dad isn't a horrible parent for letting him

He's doing f all to help his family, that's the point. Perhaps he should get on his bike and sell papers, or sweep chimneys next.

Teaching what is meaningful and what is an empty gesture is an important lesson, one he's not about to learn.
