Keeping maiden name for profession

I would really like to keep my maiden name for professional use (I'm a doctor, and my patients are used to my name), and change to my husband's last name for everything else. I'd rather not hyphenate if it can be avoided because I would have a super long name!

Has anyone ever heard of someone having an "alias", where they have two last names? I hear you have to have at least two credit cards - one with your maiden name and one with your married name. It sounds a bit confusing to me...

Any help or direction would be great!

idocher,

What you would like to do makes a good sense, a lot of people do the same - one name for professional purposes and another for their personal life.

AFAIK it is quite legal to use both, I kept my maiden name and have bank accounts and credit cards both here and overseas in it. I have applied for my green card in it too. I am not sure if you will need to open accounts with both names, but it's important for travel that your ticket is booked in the name on your passport. So i carry my marriage certificate with me, just in case.

I dont know if this helps, but wish you all the best

Make sure you have proof of joint life with your new last name (e.g. utility bills, passport, etc.). Because you change your name on your passport, license, etc., my guess is your medical license name also needs to change to your new name. All that said, I think the limiting factor is the restrictions that your medical practice will bind you with..
