I'm not sure I understand why someone would desert in the manner he's describing.

Even so - suggesting that the Taliban should "spare us the trouble" is pretty harsh.

It sounded only like speculation that the missing soldier is a deserter because he was outside of the army base. I couldn't believe Peter's comment that the soldier is collaborating with the Taliban because he made false, anti-American statements on the video tape even if they were made under duress, and that because these statements aren't true that he is obviously a liar? Is this guy nuts? This soldier is terrified for his life - he isn't the first and won't be the last to make statements under duress that he doesn't support. Unbelievable!

Ok, just looked up who Ralph Peters is - he retired from the army in 1998, was a strong supporter for the Invasion of Iraq and has a fair degree of controversy in his own past. He is also a novelist - sounds to me like he is creating the plot for a new novel iin his imagination here rather than waiting for the facts to become known. To have this guy speak on this matter was irresponsible.

Same reason The Sun has it's page 3 girls. I don't know if FNC paid him for his appearance, though. Kathryn is probably right, he is promoting a book idea.

The kid is reported as AWOL. After a certain period of time, and/or in certain circumstances, that automatically becomes desertion. As a unit commander, I did get a chance to sign a few arrest warrants.

He appears to be a deserter, but the statement is too harsh. A firing squad is one of the possible outcomes of desertion at a time of war. I'm sure that won't happen, if we manage to get him back. He would deserve to go to jail for a very long time IMHO.
