H1N1 virus in HCM?

My fiancee told me that lately there's been a rise of H1N1 cases in HCM. For my safety she said that maybe I should stay back in the U.S. After her interview and once she gets her Visa, then she will assess the situation. If things are ok, then she will come over here by herself. I told I appreciated her concern, but I know the risks, but I still want to come and get her. She scared that someone on board the plane might have the virus and if I'm on the plane with them, I might risk the chance of infection and will be quarantine once I land. What do you all think? I'm sure regardless I still plan to go back. Even if I don't go back to get and she comes here by herself, she also risk the chance of the H1N1 virus when she flies. I'm not sure what to think now. I know that in HCM, almost all the cases are from travelers that brought the H1N1 with them. I think I will just tell her not to worry and come over anyway. Thoughts?

H1N1 should not be a primary cause of concern in flight travel now. Take the precautions that are recommended by WHO. Many of us fly regularly domestically and internationally now and we did when H1N1 was at its peak. I drew the line at going to Mexico during that time, but other than that, I felt that there was no more risk than at any other time when I fly.

I would not let this interfere with whatever plans you have made to travel or for her to travel here.

I think the whole thing is getting blown out of proportion. Only about 1/2 of 1% of the people who get H1N1 end up dying from it, at least in the US. This is statistically about the same as people who die from a conventional strain of the flu.

Most people don't get the flu from the airborne virus. It doesn't stay suspended in the air very long. Most people get it from touching a contaminated surface, and then touching their nose or mouth. Surfaces get contaminated when people cough on their hands and then touch the surface. Wash your hands after touching a surface other people frequently touch, like lavatory door handles. If you're concerned about airborne infection on the plane, then bring some disposable surgical masks.

As of today, there have been a TOTAL of 383 cases of H1N1 in Vietnam, and NO deaths.

Mike, no worry. There's always a solution for every problem.

Immediately order any of these products since the demand is extremely high at the moment thanks to the H1N1 virus pandemic. Then make sure to wear it through your ENTIRE trip. Vietnam custom will know you're 100% safe and they will not quarantine you.!

Good luck and have a safe trip.

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

LOL on the Amazon link.

I agree with all the others. Don't worry about it. I remember the first time I went in late 2005 the bird flu was a big problem. I stayed away from poultry farms :) and made sure everything was cooked through.

I don't think you should worry about this H1n1 thing too much. I visited my wife on June 12 and I'm now back to the state with out any problem. Ofcourse you'll see lots of people wearing mask and stuff but you just need to be extra careful.

More of an issue here than there...eat right I don't think so, anything goes :), take vitamins.. get rest NOWAY and stay healthy TOO HOT AND POLUTED.. no issues...

I didn't rest very well when I was there. Too much fun too little time with my wife. The food was good but the way they prepare it is "rather not mention" and the time is running out by the time I get use to the weather. Oh great back to the state and my body need to adjust back. Feel like Pooh.

The university where I work in Vietnam had a number of H1N1 cases from both students and lecturers. We are shutting down for the next 10 days to keep the flu from spreading. While I don't worry much about getting H1N1, there is a concern.
