I've come across a number of posts from about a year ago on this topic, but I was hoping someone could confirm that the info is still current. My understanding of the process is as follows:

1) My fiancee can get a driver's license immediately.

- she doesn't have to have a Social Security Number in order to get her license.

- she only needs her I-94 and proof of residential address.

**Any advice on the proof of residential address requirement would be much appreciated? I was thinking that we'd open her bank account right away and have our bank official mail a letter to us confirming her residential address. Will this suffice?

2) The license will expire on the same day as her I-94 expires.

3) Once we've gotten married and filed for her AOS and EAD, we can get a 1-year license by bring the Notice of Receipt of the AOS to the DMV.

Is all this accurate? Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks,

Eric

Uhm, does she know how to drive already? Driving in Florida is hard enough for me and I have been driving since I was 17. If she is inexperienced. I would not be rushing to get her license first thing.

The first setback came during the medical. Naty had to do the 3 day sputum and then we waited 2 months for the results. YESSSS>came back negative

Went for her interview on July 16th and received her Pink Slip......Finally. Paid the AIR21 and I expect her here August 10th, 2009. Marriage will be August 21st, exactly 4 years to the day that we first met.

Bank account pretty much will suffice for proof of residential address. I believe all I had to show DMV was a check from an account with both our names and address on it.

I'm baffled why people do not get a SS# right away. It was by far the easiest thing we did. Go into local SS office about 2 weeks after arriving in U.S., fill out a couple of forms, and SS card/number arrives in the mail in a few days. And having a SS# makes things go much more smoothly while waiting for all the other things.

Does she have a learner's permit? Svetlana had to pass an online drug/alcohol course just to be permitted to take the test for learner's permit, and she had to wait another few weeks after that to get her license.

Fortunately, by the time she got her license we already had applied for AOS, so the license is good for one year (always try to avoid having to go back to DMV if possible).

Does she speak/understand English well? This is important, because the slightest misunderstanding or hesitation during the test could cause the examiner to fail her. Svetlana discovered --- on her third attempt taking the road test --- that when she told the examiner beforehand, "I understand English very well but would appreciate it if you could try to speak slowly and clearly" the examiner was more sympathetic and was more clear with her instructions.

I agree driving in Florida is mental at times.. too many old people and too many halfwits, no one uses their indicator here.. unless they are already stopped and in a turn lane. The driving test in Florida is pathetic at least where I took it.. it was 3rd world quality it's not much of a test at all I was very disappointed.. but now i understand why there are so many dead people on the roads and insurance costs are so high.. people can't drive!
