Actually the cost of living in the UK is higher than most places in the world.

But you earn a fair wage, so it makes up for it. Cost of living in NYC is through the roof but people earn a decent salary to make up for it. Hence, pay everyone a fair wage and then tax accordingly. As a result, the rich will earn $1 billion instead of $1.2 billion and everyone wins.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Cost of living is actually less in the UK with the higher taxes. Go figure.

Especially if you factor the cost of healthcare into the equation.

If you're comparing cities. . .

"The latest Economist Intelligence Unit cost of living survey highlights the way in which sharp shifts in exchange rates in recent months have altered the relative cost of living in cities around the world. By comparing the ranking of cities in September 2008 (when the price survey was conducted) to the ranking in February 2009 (adjusting the September price data for recent exchange-rate movements), it is possible to see which locations have been relative winners or losers as a result of the currency dislocation. Dublin has a 13th ranking down from 11th last year, while London has fallen to 27th place, from 8th ranking 2008, because of the plunge in the value of sterling. New York has jumped from 39th rank in 2008 to 23rd place this year."

"Despite a falling cost of living, Western Europe still remains the most expensive region in the world. All but two of the West European cities surveyed are in the top 50. The cities that can claim the enviable (or unenviable) title of cheapest in Western Europe are Reykjavik, ranked 67th, and Manchester (UK), ranked 70th."

Doesn't take healthcare into account.

A lot of people who work in London, don't live there ;)

Same deal with NYC. Hence all those buses and trains that go in from neighbouring states...

Actually the cost of living in the UK is higher than most places in the world.

I would kinda know...

Unfortunately for you we can call BS now with the internet able to show us the truth.

Says the guy who thinks that the USA is on the verge of a communist takeover

It is also relative. Inner-cities are quite expensive in most places abroad due to the demand to live there. Whereas, US cities tend to have large no-go areas. In most places, the US burbs are more expensive. What young professionals wants to live in the burbs? Of course this is a different story in the US where the poor seem to be fixated with living in cities.

Places like Alexandria, VA would be worth a good $1.2 mill in Melbourne, Aus

Your logic is not only a stretch but baffling...... How does a family have a .2 billion loss in income.. and come out "a winner"?

You're right. Clearly someone earning $1 billion instead of $1.2 billion will be doing it tough. They have bills to pay right. Whereas a walmart worker on $6 an hour should be grateful for their job. My brother-in-law has similar logic. That 'what if' you earned the $1.2 billion. Dam straight what if. How many people in the south earn more than $60K let alone $1.2 billion?

I don't know what sort of voodoo spell the Repub party has on people earning under $80K but if I was earning less than $100K, no way in the world would I be rooting for republicans who are only promoting low pay. It's almost like cheering on the person in first place who cheated while coming in tenth place yourself. While I don't agree at all (as in zero) with UAW or NE style unions, I sure as heck don't agree with people being short changed.

Yet you are now here when the life is so great there. I used to go Canada very frequent and I can say they were the most whiny people I ever met until I went to Vietnam.

OMG. You really are something, aren't you?

Actually the cost of living in the UK is higher than most places in the world.

Prove that statement.

And in February 2009, sterling was at around $1.40. Now it's around $1.65 and faring far better than the dollar.

Tax rates and the never ending debate over what they should be is not what I asked about, I asked how does the tax-man taking more money make one a winner as you stated.

When you pay more sales tax do you feel like a winner?

Since different areas have higher property tax rates, should I try to buy in a higher taxed area so "I can be a winner"?

PLease stay on point.

Danno, explain how you have armed services, schools, fire and police protection and all of the myriad government services without taxes, then we can explain to you how by paying taxes you too can be a winner.

Don't keep dodging the question by living out your dream of eventually making a billion dollars and demanding we all back your anti-tax bologna because for some odd reason you want to be prepared to not pay taxes on the billion dollars you will never earn.
