Why is welfare is a dirty word anyway? Unless some actually believe that people aspire to be in section 8 and on food stamps.

Pay people a fair wage and they won't be on welfare. I'd rather be on welfare too than work on the US's minimum wage. A minimum wage of $12 would be a different story.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

The problem is that putting a name or a face on a problem that you are praying to God you don't have to face in this economy makes you uncomfortable. It's a whole lot easier for you to be self-righteous and condescending than it is to walk in someone else's shoes.

I don't know your name or your face and that's irrelevant. I don't base my thinking on how the government will best line my pockets which be unusual but that's just me. If you really think I believe nothing bad has happened to me or will happen then I probably can't convince you.

There's nothing condescending about telling you about my experience especially when you asked want my views on conservatism then got angry assuming I was somehow talking about your family whom I knew nothing about.

You "try not to come here with an attitude"?

That is so not true.

Not anyway as angry in tone as some posters.

No, Communism is the business and all businesses are nationalized. Socialism DOES tell all how to live and businesses how to do things. Socialists make laws and moral judgements on others that they have to follow by the weight of the courts.

What about social democracies like Canada and Australia? Where we the people tell companies which rules they must follow. This is not anti-business, it's a case of making sure business are ethical and honest. Making sure businesses don't short change people, while generating huge profits for the few. Instead of earning $5 billion per quarter, they earn $4 billion and pay everyone a fair (realistic) wage. A wage which means people don't have to work nine jobs to make ends meet. Which in return means more people are employed. Workers are also happier and have more to spend. Win / win for all.

Unlike America, the courts don't run the show. The legislators set the laws. After all and unlike a judge, they are who we vote into office.

The same social democracies that can't compete with us on prices or quality because their prices are higher.

They don't want to be in a race to the bottom with corporations like walmart selling cheap foreign junk.. What matters to them is their residents quality of life. Something the US cannot compete with. Not even in a long shot.

The US is hardly renowned for quality anymore. We make the crappiest cars in the world. Our infrastructure is crumbling and dilapidated.

I been to many of these Social democratic countries in Europe and many time to Canada and trust me our quality of life is way superior.

I don't know what part of Europe you have been to but there is no way the quality of life for the average Joe here is better here. The US is generally quite run down. The roads alone are disgraceful. The sheer poverty, especially in small towns is a good indication of how well the average Joe has it. Now if you are comparing the US to a 2nd or third world country, then sure it is not too bad. When you compare the country to somewhere like Australia, infrastructure, health or wealth wise, it is third world like. Ever notice how no US cities win any international awards. This all relates back to quality of life.

I understand where you are coming from though. A F150 or equivalent to some is the best vehicle in the world. Now compare it to a car that has actually been recognized for quality and performance like an Audi. Even though in reality an Audi A6 is probably 50 times better, the truck lover will refuse to see otherwise.
