HUllo,

just moved to michigan , getting married next week(or thereabouts). As i read through some of the forum topics i see that quite alot of folk state how much they make, often in the 40 k - 60 k or more region. some even make that much when in England. Which is cool. Now is it me or does that seem weird.??? nonetheless i made between 20 - 25 k in england as an adult ed teacher, had to use most of my money to get this thing rolling because my lovely hubby was setting up a new business. Does anyone here have any advice as to how to navigate this move, living on LIMITED FUNDS???????? All the rockerfella's need not apply

lol

My wife lived with me in Ireland for a few years before we came to the US. We arrived in the US with 4 suitcases and no work and had to start from scratch. You just have to tighten the belt as much as possible, buy only the essentials and everything will work out.

Of course as things picked up here and we got jobs and started to buy furniture and household goods etc, we're done a lot less tightening of our belts since then and now that we're moving from Florida to Colorado, it's frightening the amount of stuff we've accumulated! Half of it's going in the bin or to the Goodwill store before the move!

As far as moving your stuff if you have a lot of things furniture ect that you are bringing than you can call a cargo company and do a container share. Thats when 2-3 people share the space in one container. If you don't have a lot of things it may be cheaper just to bring it with you on the plane. Some airlines allow special pricing for people who are immigrating to the US. Call the airlines and see if they can do anything for you. It helps if you are a member of one of their airline clubs.

For everyday living, coupon clipping and buying things on sale for groceries and household goods are a great way to save money. I am on a very tight budget right now and thats what I have been doing. You can save any where from $5 to $25 dollars each time you go to the store. Also if you have reusable bags bring them with you when grocery shopping. Some supermarkets will take .05-.10 cents a bag when you use them.

You may want to check out the things you use everyday and see if it is cheaper in the UK or in the US. If it is less expensive in the UK buy about six months ot a years supply of it. If you need to buy clothing when you are here in the US go to stores like burlington coat factory, marshalls and TJ max. They have some great stuff if you don't mind digging through the racks. Also you can find coupons for these stores to save even more.

Actually what I do is if I plan to go shopping I check online for a printable coupon for that store. Then print it out and bring it with me.

If you like renting movies and reading make sure to join your local library. Taking out books and dvd's are free. Or sift through the bargain book section at the book stores.

If you getting a new apartment than try to get one that has heat and hot water included. That will save you a bundle come winter time.

You can always check craigslist.org in the free section to see whats there and also freecycle.com is a good place to find free stuff.

There are so many ways to save money. I really hope this helps you out.

Check your mailbox, we have about 3 major supermarket chain every where you get new adds that run from Wed to Tues the following week.

Lot of items just switch stores, what's on store this week may be on store the following week, if it's something you use a lot and not perisheable when it's on sale, stock up on them, at time it's even cheaper than going to Costco or wholesale stores.

Look out for coupons, online, check the stores.

Lot of folks like fancy apt where you are going to give all that extra money to the landlord and that's money you never gona see again. Look for a nice descent place, SAFETY FIRST, have a drive around the neighborhood during the day, pass by there in the evening so you can get a feel of what the area is like.

The money save from a decent place compare to one of those avalon apts, you can find better use for it in the future whether it's for a downpaymen or whatever fits.

Check your local Goodwill and salvation army or thrift shop, you will not beleive what you may find there, there's this one i went to in long island you can't beleive the kind of cars you see in the parking lot, folks who can drive this kind of car you would wonder how come they are not going to Tiffany or somewhere on 5th ave.

Got a $2000 suit one time for $60 bucks, so whose going to know your business after it's all dry clean, for someone who doesn't know they'll be thinking wow this person is rolling.

I always take the advice my mother always told me, don't live for society, society don't put food on your table, just be honest and do what's right for you and your family.

Gone but not Forgotten!

The money save from a decent place compare to one of those avalon apts, you can find better use for it in the future whether it's for a downpaymen or whatever fits.

Holy cow those Avalon apartments are outrageous!!! We are moving in 3 weeks and found a place in queens for about half the price and twice the size of the avalon apartments, it's in a really nice area to boot. It also includes heat & hot water :D Just waiting for the final approval from the management company. Crossing my fingers! It is going to save a ton of cash and we will finally be able to have a nice reception next year because we had a very small simple wedding.

OP you might want to check out women in red. They have some great financial tips on how to save money.

You just get a place to live that's cheap and don't buy a lot of stuff.

Ding Ding Ding!

Live in your means, don't buy the latest thing, and you should do ok.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

Living BENEATH one's means is actually the secret.

Living the life of a Frugalista gets you thru ANY economic meltdown

Good tips, but how about some info on affordable health insurance that saves bucks for moving expenses?

I think they do have affordable health care (affordable being a relative term) for immigrants and non US citizens while they are here. You can look it up online. I was checking into it for my husband. I am starting a new job so I am going to just put him on my insurance there no need for a separate policy.

Women in red is a financial site for women thought msn.com. Google it and it's the first thing that shows up. Its similar to VJ in that it's a discussion board. It has information on saving, spending and investing for women ;).

With the coupons some stores offer double and on rare occasions triple coupons. I have gotten things for free that way. You get it on sale and use a coupon and double or triple it and it saves so much money. Just check with your local grocery stores. Some don't advertise but you can call them and find out if they do and what days they have double coupons.

You really can' start looking for a job until you have your EAD. You will file for it when you file for your AOS. My husband was lucky in that he came through JFK. I think they are the only airport left that still gives them out. As soon as you are married go to the social security office and get your social security card. Once you file your AOS it takes about 3 months to get the EAD card and then you can start working.

True words! I've saved a ton by living in an apartment in a great area, but that is small. And since I live on the 1st floor, I manage to not run the air conditioner (in Texas) and still be okay temperature-wise & save a ton on electricity bills. Also, when they try to raise the rent each year, I talk them into not raising it at all, or lowering the amount it'll be raised by (whereas many people just accept rent increases or move).
