I've just jumped into the process of getting my fiance into America, and from the looks of it, I've got a long wait ahead of me. (Why does Vermont have to be the slowest service center?)

Anyway, I was wondering what everyone else is doing or has done with their wedding plans? I can't really book a caterer or even send out invitations because I have no idea when everything will be finished with. What are some things I CAN do in order to make the last few stressful weeks before the ceremony less stressful?

We already have got ideas for decorations, my fiancee already has a dress, and we are planning out the things we want, but we can't really do anything that has to do with dates. What more can be done?

Also, if there is any other Chinese/American couples out there, could you post some pictures or ideas on how to throw a good reception with the theme of blending two worlds into one?

Thanks in advance!

We met at Disney, and are trying to start our own Magic Kingdom.

Alice, I can't wait for you to come home.

My sister in law is Chinese. When my brother and she got married, she wore the traditional North American white wedding dress to the ceremony but wore the traditional red Chinese wedding outfit to the reception. They also arranged to have part of the service in Cantonese and part in English. I don't remember what else specifically that they ( it was 21 years ago) did but I remember these. Oh, yes, my brother and our family paid for the wedding - I guess that is also part of the Chinese tradition for the groom.

I've also moved this post to the China Regional Forum as I expect you will get more useful advice and information here than in Off Topic.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Do a simple civil thing at the court house and plan the big reception a couple months later after you get the marriage cert. Then there is no big pressure and you can do it up right.

We will have my Chinese bride in trad China dress and me in my trad (Scottish) apparel for the party.

We will both be in trad Chinese dress in a China reception before we leave for America.

Just ideas as this is what me and my SO are doing. Last month we did the pre wedding pictures (big thing in China) and should have them early August.

September 16th we are having unofficial though large Ceremony in China where I am flying a few of my family members to and she has already invited way way more then I expect people there.

Though this ceremony will have all the bells and whistles of a regular wedding it will not be a legal wedding since we filed K1

Once she is here in the states we will be having a small gathering for my family but doing the legal wedding at courthouse, well actually here in Connecticut it will be in my living room. Justices of Peace here in CT come right to your home to give you the legal wedding.

We went this route as she has way more family then I do so for us the best option was the large ceremony in China.

Oh and to the wedding dress thing, my SO just happens to be a wedding planner by occupation and yes she will have traditional western style dress for ceremony then Chinese traditional red cheongsam for reception. Also she has to wear a black or blue Cheongsam dont remember which color to a family gathering in the early morning with just her parents and mine, I am still not fully clear on this one.

For me black tux for everything, so I get to be penquin from early morning till late at night.

If you have not done the pre wedding pictures yet in China you are in for a treat, *sarcasm*
