Does it bother you to go to and from work etc not having your gun inside your jacket?

To rephrase slightly - do you feel unsafe on the streets of Manhattan?

No, Manhattan is pretty safe.

If that's the case then there's surely very little need or benefit to carrying a gun on one's person...

At the moment - yes.

But there's always the possibility of a natural disaster or a terror attack which could

leave city residents on their own for many days without essential services. Just imagine

a total power blackout, no 911, no running water, banks closed, supermarkets empty,

looting, rioting and anarchy. I don't know about you, but I don't want to find myself

defenseless in a situation like this.

Well we seem to have successfully wandered off the beaten track of reality. Just out of curiosity Mark what training do you regularly undertake in order to ensure that owning a gun actually gives you more than a marginal advantage if such an unlikely event were to take place?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

How prepared are you really if that were to happen - do you have a 6 month supply of drinking water and canned foods?

What about a lead-lined panic room?

Perhaps you bought one of those personal biohazard survival kits that went on sale not long after 9/11?

Not to mention that rather presumes that the majority would descend into lawlessness and brutality were such an event to occur. Precedence shows us that in fact the opposite occurs. For the most part people help other people to survive, not top them off in a bizarre attempt to be the last man alive on the island. Methinks this has strayed into the realms of computer generated fantasy :)

I have enough supplies to survive for two weeks. The official nyc.gov guide recommends at least three days.

No panic room, but I do have a gas mask.

What, like Katrina?

Well its ridiculous isn't it - how can anyone argue that on the one hand that Manhattan is safe enough to walk around without fear of being the victim of a violent crime, and that presumably the only practical purpose in owning a gun there is to defend property from a next to non-existent chance of a home invasion (quadruply so if you live in an apartment complex) or in the event of a wholesale breakdown of society.

How about 9/11?

You don't need to look for other examples when there is perfectly good precedent of disaster in the city that we're talking about.

If it's so ridiculous, why does the government Office of Emergency Management publish

ridiculous things like survival/preparedness plans?

The threat of a terror attack is not "next to non-existent", it's very very real. More so

for NYC than any other place in the US.

9/11 didn't cause enough destruction for a wholesale breakdown of society. Hurricane Katrina did.

You think terrorism is a joke, don't you?

No I don't. Sorry Mark.

1) Do you think the chances of another terrorist strike on NYC are so remote, it's not worth

even considering, let alone preparing for one?

2) Do you think a Katrina-type scenario could never happen in NYC?
