The voting is anonymous so how could it be clique-ish?
People would band together on the side and discuss how to vote on certain topics and certain posters.
We're all adults here...
...some with lobotomies, sadly...

The issue really boils down to what voters would be voting for (or on). I would vote for (or against) the content of a post but might also be strongly influenced by its grammar and presentation. Others would vote for humor or the throwing-in of a favored Internet or foreign-language phrase. Still others would vote for posts by windbags who are all over the site and who thus appear knowledgeable. Accordingly, ratings of posts would be meaningless. Also, what about posts that consist of the ENTIRE preceding thread and a new addition of only a "thumbs up" icon or a "me, too"? How are we supposed to rate THOSE?

I would consider it more worthwhile to "pin," or make into FAQs, subjects that occur over and over and OVER (financial support, what to put under "length of duration of trip" on the I-131 application, and so forth). When I last looked, a lot of the currently pinned threads contained a lot of now-irrelevant garbage ("can we pin this, Captain, please?"); could these all be cleaned up and only the most ACCURATE, WELL-STATED posts be left in? And a Pitcairn Island subforum, si man?

Often times it doesn't even have to be discussed, just implied. If a poster finds themselves unpopular (for whatever reason, good or bad) amongst a certain group, there will be active head hunts to mod her down, no matter what she says. So now what...are we going to impose the duty of policing user-moderation on the mods? Do you get a hand-slap if you mod a poster down too many times? What if that user really is posting useless stuff? What if *everyone* is unfairly modding a single person down, do you issue temp bans to everyone who negatively modded that person?

There's just no way to reasonably police this mechanism and still be fair. Crowds are stupid. Anonymous crowds are cruel and stupid.

Oh good heavens...all it would be is a vote on immigration posts. You guys are demonstrating exactly what Captain Ewok wants to avoid in the immigration forums. One person gives advice, good or bad and others get into a big argument over it. With the post voting, there'd be less of inclination to bicker and more inclination to actually post helpful information. People will take or leave advice regardless, but at least those who are trying to sort through overwhelming meandering advice can look at the posts that got the most votes.

It's worth at least trying.

Ultimately it's up to Ewok to decide if it's worth trying, so I won't belabor the point. But I do think that for anyone who is trying to sort through the volumes of advice, the guides are always the best place to start, followed by Search. If they still don't have an answer, they should post their question in the relevant forum. In all cases, they should decide for themselves what information to heed, and what to toss.
