In Missouri, the DMV, are "licensing offices", and are private companies that are given the responsibilities of licensing. It's a patronage appointment that they're given this responsibility. It brings business to their private enterprise. Most of them are "insurers". Of course. Anyway, I've been to one that was a pig-sty and filthy. I noticed that after the last election, as the ability to be a DMV is "awarded" by party, that it's no longer a DMV, and someone else has it now. So, your office, may not have been a "government" office.

our DMV has signs posted everywhere about "verbal abuse" and that they have a 100% no tolerance policy for it and if you do it they will just call the cops..

Yeah.. so you stand in line for 3 hrs, are treated like cattle and get harassment for being in the wrong lines due to poor signage.. it's the highlight of our week let me tell you!

I wonder if it works both ways. Like.... you could call the police on them and say you've been suffering verbal abuse and the sign said to call.

When people call me and use bad language with me, all I say is,

"In accordance with University policy, we have rules on ethics which you have chosen to violate and now this conversation is over"

When I was a more junior employee at my old job, I kept on getting these calls from this really irate crazy person who had totally lost their mind. I knew this because their reactions were so extreme, even though we were going out of our way to please this person. Anyway, one day, the Vice President happened to be in the room while I was trying to be diplomatic. She had me transfer the phone to her office, then she proceeded to go up one side of him and down the other, including threatening a lawsuit. He never called again. Sometimes being nice is an open invitation to mean crazy people.

Wow this is really interesting! I went to the DMV here a couple days ago with my fiances sister to get new tags for her car. The building was new and very fancy! It seems to be the trend here in suburban Denver... the SSN office was much the same. No idea where the funding comes from and who runs it, but there seems to be a good system down here.
