This has nothing to do with Islam. It's waaaay past anything halal, so iddah rules don't apply.

Question: if the only purpose of an orfi marriage is having sex, then why do it? You can have sex before you get married - not islamically, of course. But if the orfi marriage is not the right way to do it, then why not go all out and ignore the marriage requirement for sex altogether? To me it seems that those who do get orfi marriages do truly believe that it allows them to have sex. They might be wrong, islamically speaking, but ignorance isn't the same as having dishonorable intentions.

These can only be people who haven't read a Quran. No excuse for that, if you're Muslim.

But my point is - say they've read the Quran, know an orfi marriage is "wrong", but choose to get one anyway. Why would they do it when they could just have sex? If they want to ignore the Quran, then what's the purpose of this "half-assed" in-between marriage? Is it haram, but not as bad as having sex out of marriage entirely? I just don't get why you would do it - so hotels will allow you to have a room together?

An urfi meets the basic requirements of a marriage contract (consent, two witnesses, etc.) and that's the justification for it and why it's called "Islamically" married by those who choose to participate in it. The thing is, Sharia law governs Personal Status laws in Egypt, which include marriage and divorce. If it was Islamic, it would be a legal marriage but it's not. Urfi wives have no rights (ie, rights granted in a divorce). Children born of urfi marrages are not legitimate and have no rights - they aren't issued a birth certificate, no access to education, no access to health care, etc. If it was legal and proper - or halal - none of these things would be an issue. However the fact is urfi marriages are illegal, but so is speeding and even though it's illegal people still do it.

OMG!!! Talk about a thread getting out of hand!!! According to all that I have read, my perfectly legal in the courts and legal Islamically marriage ended when my husband blatantly refused to honor our marriage and moved out of our bed and pursued other women six weeks after he arrived here. The only difference is the "paper" trail hadn't been taken care of, which is almost final now.

Quote it correctly if you are going to quote it at all. I have not lived with my soon to be ex in over a month. Even in the time we did live in the same house, we were as roommates, nothing more. The "paper" divorce was filed for before he moved out. If we had been living in Jordan, I would have been divorced in the same day.

3 months? MMMM yes, I agree on that, but, as my marriage was Islamically over for more than a year and 1/2, IMO it's been over long enough. Unless of course you can get pregnant by delayed reaction or divine intervention, I don't think I have anything to worry about.

My life has been blessed with the love of 4 of the sweetest men in the world. James, Jonathan, Nicolas, and Islam, my sons and my S/O.

OPSSSSSSS I DID IT AGAIN!

I just want to add that I won't make the mistake of posting on this or any other forum here on visa journey. I find it's not worth the misunderstandings and personal attacks. I should have known that from prior experience, but I guess I forgot. Thanks anyway for the advice and helpful hints.

Of course, I will ask the moderators to close this thread, If someone would please tell me who to contact?

The obsenity of calling such an arrangement "Islamic" is that this label is used to allow for a total disregard of Islamic law in a Muslim country. However, the same people who advocate ignoring the tenets of marriage in Islam will jump thru hoops to respect secular law in the US to get what they want. The contortion involved is all about getting what you want using deception, haram justifications against Allah, and to involve the law governng other Muslims to do this is incredibly offensive.

The irony of urfi nee "Islamic marriage" is that it isn't valid until registered. So much for the "it doesn't have to be registered to be valid" argument. That's a bunch of BS.
