Hey all!

I just got great news today in the mail. My GC arrived! Wohoo!

Though I'm wondering why I got a 10-yr GC instead of a 2-yr conditional GC?

Should I call the customer service hotline and ask?

Or where there cases of couples getting a 10-yr GC which came to the US on a K1 visa?

I just wanna avoid being on trouble for not reporting this.

We've been through too much by doing the whole medical. Maybe the USCIS is making it up to us. Haha!

And what should I do now that I have the 10-year GC? Should I apply for citizenship then after my GC expires?

I would appreciate it if someone could give us any advice.

VJ had been such a great help to us. I only trust this site when it comes to visa inquiries.

THANK YOU SOO MUCH, VJ! :luv:

If you and your spouse were married for more than two years then you would get the 10 year card as opposed to the 2 year conditional one. For citizenship though you still have to have been married three years.

I am not sure if you also have to have had your status for three years as well coz they say married for three and three years since you got original adjustment of status. (check with immigration lawyer or go to the website)

Looking at your status seems like you just got married so.......

And congratulations!

Actually you have to be a resident for 3 years (if residency is based on marriage) if your not a resident because of marriage you have to wait 5 years to go for naturalization .. and it goes by the Resident Since: date on your card

First of congrats :)

I see a lot of speculation here. If you were married for more than 2 years, then it is totally fine to get 10 years Green card.

If you are married for less than 2 years, then you should get a conditional Green card good for 2 years. If you get a 10 years GC card in this case, it is a clerical error that may cost you a lot if you do not tell USCIS.

You can apply for citizenship 90 days before the third anniversary of your green card issuance, as long as you are still married to the US citizen.

Hope that helps

There have been others who have mistakenly received the 10 year card when it should have been a 2 year card. I suggest you make an infopass appointment and go in person to speak to an immigration officer. USCIS does make mistakes - but they still hold you responsible even though they make a mistake. If you have been married less than 2 years when your AOS is approved, then you only qualify for a 2 year card even if they mistakenly give you a 10 year card. You are still responsible for applying for a permanent 10 year card by the 2nd anniversary of your green card approval.

You can make an infopass at http://www.uscis.gov . Select the option 'schedule an appointment' in the right hand column, then follow the instructions. Good luck.

All of the above.

Kathryn is a mod here, she knows her stuff. Everyone else who's posted so far in this thread is merely speculating or stating things as they would like them to be. Do the right thing, give yourself some peace of mind and make the infopass appointment. This may be a mistake on their part, but it's your responsibility to get it right. Otherwise in 2 years you'll be posting about how you missed the deadline for filing for removal of conditions, and that is a serious problem.
