WASHINGTON – House Democrats at work on health legislation are narrowing in on an income tax surcharge on the highest-paid wage earners to help pay the cost of subsidizing insurance for the 50 million who lack it.

...

The surtax would apply to individuals with adjusted gross income of more than $200,000 and couples over $250,000.

In addition to rolling back the Bush tax cuts?

Yessir.

This doesn't affect me one bit so I ain't complaining.

But for those of you who will feel the pinch... bend over, bichez!

You'll feel it soon enough. All they have to do is keep printing more money for their "stimuli"

that don't stimulate and their bailouts that don't bail out, just enough to weaken the dollar

another 50%, and before you know it, $100,000 will be the new $200,000 and you will be rich!

I don't know about that. Real wages tend to not keep up with inflation where I work. The only way I've historically gotten "real" raises has been by jumping from one company to another. Over here, they'll give us a decent (by insurance standards) bonus but a sub-inflation raise.

Indeed. Assuming the wages keep up with inflation, those making $100,000 today will be

making $200,000 tomorrow and will be taxed as "the rich". Inflation will push people up

into higher tax brackets even if their purchasing power doesn't increase.

Kind of like what they've done with the AMT.

Well that's even worse then.

Oh, I see now. I don't know though. My employer has never kept up with inflation.

According to the Inflation Calculator at BLS.GOV, $1 in 2000 has the same buying power as $1.24 in 2009. So anyone making $100,000 in 2000 should be making $124,000 today to just keep up with inflation.

This makes me feel good since my income has just about than tripled in that time span. :D

Not mine. The fixed component of my compensation, in 'real' terms, is just about 15% higher than it was in 2000 :(
