Alternative transport.

Rebuild the railways. Develop mass transit.

an english solution to an American problem. if America was england, it might be helpful. if Americans were englishmen, it might be accepted.

Besides, in most parts America just isn't densely populated enough to justify it. Mass transit works well where I live since Jersey is more densely populated than Belgium, but can you imagine commuter trains in upstate NY? It just wouldn't work. You'd have to drive miles to the station, you'd have to have parking, you'd need a rental or a taxi once you got off the train. It would be silly.

Single rural lines making a network from hubs, multiple urban ones to accommodate usage and reduce car traffic.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Gee, I wonder what happened after June 2001 to start the economic decline that didn't bounce back until June 2005?

Of the 10 expansions since 1949, as measured from the end of the recession (trough) to the end of the expansion (peak), the expansion from 2001 through last year ranks last in average growth of GDP, investment, employment growth, and employee compensation.

Yeah, blame it on 9/11. Dumbass.

That was your explanation. Thanks. Got another more plausible explanation since your quote doesn't address 2001-2005 specifically?

Why does the 'blame' go the bailouts and stimulus?

Maybe people ought to take a look at the fact that 'trickle down' policies begun in the 80's didn't work. Profits weren't put into creating jobs. They were put into high risk-vehicles that crashed in 2008.

Any evidence the trillions spent are doing anything as billed? Unemployment dropped during those "trickle down" years.

IMO, we need to build a new economy. The economic stimulus jobs were mostly temporary, but we need something to drive the next boom...alternative energy. Combine it with a health care reform that effectively reduces its impact on our GDP. But hey, what do I know. I'm just a hippie.

If alternative energy was nearly that promising, this would not have ended like this.

This week, T. Boone Pickens announced that his plans to build the US $10 billion, 4,000-megawatt, Pampa Wind project are on hold. He cited lack of available transmission and funding concerns as the reason for the scale back.

There's a lot of resistance to changing our energy to newer, renewable sources, but it is moving forward.

Large projects getting shelved is the hippie version of 'moving forward'?

Ya know, I have come to the realization that many of you so called hippies on VJ aren't hippies at all, even if you think you are. (I know you are mostly joking  ).

Stina, you can be hippie too. All you have to do is care. It's more a state of mind. :)

I can't look it up right now, but in my home state, there's an 800 million dollar algae production plant being built. The algae will be used as biofuel.

LOL yes well, I already am part hippie in many ways, even if my viewpoints may not all sound "hippie". I live pretty simple compared to many and am not super high tech or spend a lot on things=hippie in my opinion. I am walking the walk, not talking the talk. I'm j/k with you. If I didn't take showers often I would be even more hippie. Too bad I do take showers every day. :(

The BIGGEST tax cuts in history, targeted directly at the wealthy, produced an expansion that ranked LAST in average growth of GDP, investment, employment growth, and employee compensation.

Source?

Targeted? You mean people keeping more of what they earn is targeted?

How's that compare to the trillions blown (or will be) with record high unemployment and declining growth in the GDP with historically low rates of interest?
