Hello everyone! I just have a question regarding purchasing a one way ticket to the Philippines. I called my travel agency about purchasing a one way ticket to the Philippines this coming August. I was told that since I am a US Citizen , I can't purchase a one way ticket to the Philippines if using a different airline except Philippine Airlines :o Is this true? Is there such law that explains this matter? Have anyone out there came across to this situation before? Thanks for reading...

It's been our experience that a one way ticket costs the same as a round trip ticket.

Moved to the PI forum, for the best response.

In my experience, a one way ticket is always allowed, but costs 80% of a R/T ticket.

There is no law precluding you from a one way ticket, although you may undergo more scrutiny from the Law Enforcement perspective.

Circumstances vary, therefore you may or may not, experience additional questions about the ticket choice.

I'd been going home to the Philippines for the past 20 years and never had a problem with the Philippine Immigration. I was never asked to provide any return ticket to the US. I have no problem with the cost of the ticket. The reason why i am only purchasing a one way ticket is because NVC don't have an interview date set up yet for my wife. And we will be taking a different airline and be upgrading our seats. Maybe i should inquire from a different travel agency not associated with Philippine Airlines.

There are two issues in play I think. First, if you are not a Philippine citizen, you are technically required to have a ticket *leaving* the Philippines in order to be allowed entry. Truth is they often don't check this, but sometimes they do and they can and will refuse entry. This is one reason that some airlines/agents may not allow you to book this. There are ways around it, but they may not be so nice (buy a one way fully refundable ticket leaving the country and then get a refund after you get to the philippines). Also as was pointed out, many airlines charge the same or sometimes even more for a one way ticket than for the full round trip - it is b.s. but it is common.

So why do you need a one way ticket?

The reason being.. my wife doesn't have an interview date set up yet. We are guessing around late August or so. I also found a one way ticket via EVA AIR for $358.00 promo going on ryt now. If i purchase a round trip ticket from Philippine Airlines and decide to rebook.. it will cost me $130.00.. And we have not decided what airline to take also when we head to the US after the interview and hopefully get the VISA. This is the reason why I am purchasing a one way ticket....

My comment was related to the US departure side, with respect to a one-way ticket. when I worked for the US Government, I was questioned several times about a one-way ticket, until I produced a Diplomatic Passport. The issue ended there. This questioning was all related to "guess what"? 9/11.....

I would just press on with your plan, as an issue will likely not arise. Have a safe trip.
