Have you scrubbed away that "foreign" accent of his so he blends in is as well?

I can't tell if you meant that in a kidding way or not. I get the impression you did not.

Suffice it to say that if you knew what is going on in our life right now, you wouldn't find it very funny.

If you have other documents that satisfy the requirements of the I9, you never have to show your greencard.

Use the same documents as any USC - a SS card (without restrictions) and a driver's license. Keep yourself on the same playing field as the rest of the workforce.

Edited to add that this has become a 'soapbox' issue with me. After four years of navigating the waters of immigration, I'm sick-and-dammit-tired of proving this, that and the other thing. I don't WANT my husband to be 'different' in ANY aspect of his life in America. I don't want people poking and nibbing about for a peek at his greencard. It's none of their f***ing business as far as I am concerned. We've paid our money and done our time in the system - he's a legally documented alien. If that hard work and spent money gives him the right to obtain documents (driver's license; unrestricted SS card) then we want them.

I could not agree MORE. Went the day after his card arrived to get that wording off of his SSC . Here in NJ as my hubby is still under the conditional resident his drivers license has in RED lettes Temp Immi Status and expires 3 months after his Resident card. Makes me very Hot under the collar for sure.... Can not wait to gt the 10 year card just to get that off.

Why is it that the only one who can stop the crying is the one who started it in the first place?

They put that ####### on the Texas licenses also-but not for GC holders, just those with EAD's. My husband purposely waited until he had the GC to go get his driver's license, so he would have a "regular" one. I can empathize.

He had his SS card changed the day after he got his GC also, for all of the reasons previously mentioned.

When you say have the restriction removed from SS card, that means you get a new SS card right? Do you get the new SS card on the same day or it comes in the mail? Do i also fill out the same application form when i applied for SS using EAD.

You should receive the card in the mail within 14 days of the application processed. All SSN cards are mailed from SSA Headquarters. However, the amount of time it takes to receive the new card from the time you apply is going to depend on how long it takes SSA to verify your immigration status.

If you apply at the SSA office in person you do not need the Form SS-5. The office will print out an application for you to sign after you have reviewed the information as being correct. You only need the Form SS-5 if you mail in the application or have someone take it into the office for you.

DO NOT DO NOT let them have your old SSN card until you get the new one. If they ask for it say the dog ate it. LOL

It's the exact same card, without the restriction. Same SS number and name only. Takes a couple of weeks average.

Everybody uses the SS-5 form to apply for a new card - citizens and immigrants alike - so just because it's filed for with the same form doesn't mean the restriction will still be there when the card arrives.
